The Mets knocked out Zack Wheeler in the sixth inning, they went 3-10 with RISP and it didn’t matter. They ended up with another one-run loss, this one a 4-3 setback to the Phillies.
We’ve gotten so used to the pen coming up with big efforts that we’re shocked when they give up two runs in four innings like they did tonight. On the flip side, the Mets didn’t do enough damage against the Phillies’ pen as perhaps they could have.
We could talk about the hard-hit balls right at Philadelphia fielders and bad strike calls from the home plate ump. Somehow, tonight, it doesn’t seem right. Maybe that means the white flag has been raised. Maybe it’s just being done with alibis.
Regardless, the Braves – currently losing, 4-2 – seem to be letting the Mets and Phillies stick around. But the Mets just don’t seem interested in the playoffs.
Gut Reaction: Another one run loss and this time, like many late season games, it was the stressed, mismanaged bullpen. At least this time in wasn’t the lack of hitting with RISP but when the chips were down they didn’t deliver the game changing hit. The composition of this team should be scrutinized and changes should be make. Four games ago, if they won instead of lost, they would be 1.0 game out of the wild card and 1.5 game out of the division title. This team hasn’t gotten the job done.
metsense, you win…they made it a 1 run game!
I was not surprised when Familia gave up that double in the eighth inning, nor when Loup’s evening was over after his 11-pitch inning, nor when Walker was pulled after 5 innings. Hand, Familia and Lugo shouldn’t have even been in this game.
