MLB announced that there would be 28-man rosters for the month of April. The Mets have several different ways they could use these two extra spots, besides the default of just adding extra relievers. They could:
Carry a third catcher given the injury to James McCann
Carry a legitimate backup outfielder given the injury to Starling Marte
Carry an additional starting pitcher, given the injury to Taijuan Walker
Some might say that the extra relievers would be valuable, given the short Spring Training and the likelihood that starters will pitch even fewer innings than usual in the early going. My preference would still be to have relievers pitch multiple innings. That’s an easier plan to utilize if Seth Lugo is back to his old self.

Perhaps Anderson and Megill start the season at AAA, leaving room for two others to start the season, but I would have trouble saying whom and for what reason. It is better for younger players to play at AAA then sit at ML level..
Lucchesi is recovering from TJ surgery.
The starting pitchers aren’t stretched out because of the shorten spring training so 15 pitchers would be prudent. The DH also eliminates the need of the PH because the pitcher doesn’t bat anymore.
Plummer or Lee should make team if Marte isn’t ready based on their 2021 minor league stats. They deserved it and should be rewarded for last year.
Peterson or Megill should make the team if Walker isn’t ready based on their total major league stats. They earned the first nod.
The two extra pitchers in April can make an impression to stay on the ML team past May 1st. It would be healthy competition for the backend of the bullpen.
