After a terrific outing against the Giants last time out, Carlos Carrasco turned in a 2021-vintage performance for him, squandering a 4-1 lead and giving up 8 R in 3.2 IP, as the Mets lost the final game of the series to the Cardinals, 10-5 in St. Louis Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals scored in the first inning to take the lead but the Mets made that a short-lived one, as Tomas Nido and Brandon Nimmo hit back-to-back two-run doubles to put the Mets up three runs. But Carrasco didn’t have it and by the end of the fourth inning, the Mets were staring at an 8-4 deficit.
Further proof that it just wasn’t the Mets’ day came in the sixth inning, when Mark Canha was thrown out at second base trying to stretch for a double, only to be outdone by Nido Luis Guillorme, who was thrown out at third base trying to stretch for a triple. You want your guys to be aggressive but that was some lousy baserunning when down by four runs.
Of course, it couldn’t be a Mets game without close calls and being hit by pitches. Nimmo hit the deck to avoid being hit in the face early in the contest and J.D. Davis had to leave the game after being hit in the foot. A scrum ensued after a pitch was up and in to Nolan Arenado. After the game, Buck Showalter had a great quote, referencing today’s fracas compared to what happened yesterday when Pete Alonso actually did get hit in the noggin:
“I’ll let them handle their players,” Showalter said about Arenado taking exception to the up-and-in pitch. “I know our player got hit in the head and went to first base.”
That pitch didn’t come close to hitting Arenado, but good on Lopez, new to the team for throwing it there.
JD just can’t catch a break. x-rays were negative, but watch he has to go on the IL for a month.
Canha looked safe on the replay, but yeah, probably want to be conservative there. Nido should never go for 3 – although i have to say, the cardinals outfielders made some damn good throws.
Good rood trip, good time for a day off, expecting a beat down of the phillies at home.
Gut Reaction: This team can’t get a sweep. They must be soft. (Just kidding).
Nido had two hits today and drove in 2 runs. Guillorme was the one who was thrown out at third base.
It was a tough afternoon but a successful road trip.
Thanks for the correction – this has been fixed.
After decades of watching the Mets be slow afoot and way-too-conservative on the bases, I’m glad they are showing some base running chutzpa. Hopefully it is a reflection of coach Cora and a new attitude. Those outs probably did not lose this game, but that approach can certainly win games in the future.
I couldn’t watch this game, but I heard Canha was leading off the inning and was safe after all, even with a great throw… a worthwhile effort. And Guillorme? The play was in front of him and only a super-human effort nailed him… I can live with that.
I noticed that Arenado got more bold as he became more surrounded with bodies. Not that I’m a brave warrior or anything, but he took his time getting mad. I thought whoever pulled Alonso down should be cited. Pete could have been injured. That little coach is damn lucky Alonso didn’t take offense.
Mets now need to regroup and take no hostages… forge ahead with confidence.
Suspensions to Arenado (2 games) and the reliever that hit Davis, Cabrera (1 game). Way too soft on Arenado, but that coach taking down Alonso was pure bullshit and needs some discipline. The Cardinals manager talking like a rookie… I thought I was hearing Luis Rojas (stand up for ourselves, could threatened his career, and other nonsense that sounds good in his head). Lost alot of respect for the Cardinals as a team. If they bring their bravado to Citifield, they better have more wrestlers in the coaching box.
Did y’all read that Strawberry said, ‘it’s time to charge a mound. Whether it’s intentional or not, there needs to be a message sent’? That’s coming from a guy that became a preacher! So, you know it’s overdue.
