The Mets scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to get an unbelievably unlikely 8-7 win over the Phillies Thursday night in Philadelphia. Gary Cohen said it was the biggest ninth-inning comeback for the Mets in 25 years. Ron Darling marveled over seven runs and eight hits in just 29 pitches, saying he had never seen that before.

The ninth inning started with Starling Marte getting an infield hit, followed by a two-run homer by Francisco Lindor. Pete Alonso kept the chains moving with a double. One out later Jeff McNeil put runners on the corners with a single, which put the tying run on deck. That made the Phillies go to their closer but Corey Knebel brought a gas can to the mound. He gave up an RBI single to Mark Canha and then an RBI double to pinch hitter J.D. Davis. Brandon Nimmo tied the game with a two-run single. And Marte, who homered in the sixth inning for the Mets’ first run, almost went yard again. He settled for an RBI double that put the Mets ahead and capped the tremendous comeback.

None of the ninth-inning heroics would have meant much without great relief work from Chasen Shreve and Adonis Medina, who combined for four scoreless innings after starter Taijuan Walker was rocked for four runs in the first inning and seven in four frames before his night ended. Edwin Diaz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the win.

There are now at least three incredible moments in the 2022 season for the Mets. There was the five-run comeback on the road in St. Louis and the combo no-hitter against the Phillies at Citi Field. And now there’s the seven-run comeback.

It makes you wonder if there’s anything this team can’t do.

“These little moments over the course of 162 games lead to special seasons”

    Paraphrasing, but yeah.

Diaz is un hittable at the moment.

Buck giving credit to Trevor Williams for saving the bullpen yesterday which enabled them to be fresh today. Buck is the best.

A special season is a brewing.

    Wow… Wow… Wow.

A grand day in MetsLand !!!

    Starling Marte was Sterling:
    A bomb off Nola.
Busts down the line in the ninth for a hit when 6 runs down…
a clutch clutch bomb off Knebel…
a great throw from the outfield (which I did not see)?

    Too many heroes to mention.

I’m sure I was not alone in thinking by the 6th inning that we needed to win on Friday because this game was done. The Phillies had swagger and looked dominant while we did nothing. Hard to remember that other teams also have dominant starters. So I turned off the game and popped it back on for the 9th because like any other addiction I like to watch Met games.
Wow is such an appropriate expression for this win. A true team hitting explosion in the 9th. We always feel that if we can get past a dominate starter then we own the opposing pen. And to finish this off against their closer was so sweet. And yes, Buck has made a bug difference. At his post game he said there are things that he can’t say on live TV and one of the questioners said like “what the Buck just happened here?” Those three defining moments thus far mentioned above are all good signs of a balanced team who does not give up. Hard not to feel very optimistic about our chances this year and Jake has not even thrown a pitch. Can you imagine the lift if he comes back ready to play? OMG. #LGM

I almost turned the “boring” game off at 7-0, but I wanted to watch Medina pitch, so I stayed tuned. And what a ninth inning!

Lindor came up with the big two-run HR, breaking his slump. And McNeil (the guy who almost was traded to Seattle) is gold again! Marte—a five-tool pro! Eppler and Cohen—Thank you!

Medina looks like he might be a good starter, with his good pitch assortment.

Time to extend Nimmo, Bassitt and Diaz!

I dont think this game necessarily means end if season triumph, but at the end of the season games like this get done by successful teams.

    wow.

The Cards comeback was aided by shoddy defense and a few lucky breaks.

This one though, the Mets bats earned every bit of their hits, except well maybe Canha, who was the beneficiary of another well placed infield hit.

Tremendous win. Would have been even better if D. Smith had not struck out.

Besides the comeback, it’s winning the first game in Philadelphia that means a lot. Now the Phillies are looking uphill for the weekend, with no Wheeler and Nola spent, and that means falling further off the pace and maybe sowing some dissent… that’s not a cheap payroll over in that dugout.

No way that Lindor’s slump is just “over”… he can go still go 0 for his next five games… but his clutch dinger sure helps. Marte, on the other hand, must feel freed up… like his lost luggage just arrived from the airport… he knows he belongs, as do the fans. His impact on the team is many-faceted and often unquantifiable… he’s an important X-factor.
