Trevor Williams and Stephen Nogosek combined to allow just two hits and no runs in 6.2 innings Wednesday night. Unfortunately, Tylor Megill started and allowed 8 ER in 1.1 IP, digging the Mets a hole from which they could not recover, as they fell to the Nationals, 8-3.

The game actually got off to a great start for the Mets, who plated three runs in the first inning. Brandon Nimmo led off with a double and scored on an error. Then DH Pete Alonso drilled a two-run homer to give the Mets the early lead.

But Megill lacked both command and control and by the time the first inning was over, the Mets trailed by two runs. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Megill served up a 3-run homer in the second inning before being mercifully removed from the game.

At the start of the night, Megill had a 2.43 ERA. After his ugly outing, he now has a 4.41 ERA.

The Mets look to get back on track with a win tomorrow afternoon to add another series win to their ledger. The Mets and Nats have split the first two games of the series.

    Gut Reaction: I got sick.

Miguel had nothing. The bats work flat after the first inning. Dominic Smith and nothing and needs to come out of his funk very soon.
Alonso has found his power stroke. Williams and Nogosek pitched well. So that is something positive. The winning streak is in jeopardy.

Today will be a good test for keeping the streak alive. Winning series’ is critical to success, especially in-division and against poor teams. The Mets have basically won series’ before the last game, so today is a real rubber game test in my opinion. Would be easy to take a blow on a Thursday afternoon getaway before a homestand. Good teams recover from games like last night, know that they need to beat the opposing pitcher with a 6 ERA and take the series. You cant run the B team out for this game.

You know that Buck is every bit as concerned as we are that the team nail down this game and this series. But what is the B team? I would support Jankowski getting a start, and Guillorme is warming up and presents a plus on both sides of the ball. Frankly, I’m tired of Lindor’s struggles hitting the ball squarely, he would sit one out. And Dom Smith sits today… just can’t afford his three poorly-struck outs…. hope Escobar gets going… JD rakes in getaway game… Jank contributes.

    Nimmo (no brainer)
    Marte (for RH/LH balance)
    McNeil 2B (why not 3rd?)
    Pete (bombs away)
    Jank (speed between power guys)
    JD DH (heating up)
    Guilly SS (a pitch-count problem)
Esco (responds well to hitting lower?)
    McCann (the other no-brainer)
