The Mariners ended Drew Smith’s scoreless streak with a run in the eighth inning and emerged with a 2-1 win over the Mets Friday night at Citi Field in the opener of a three-game set.
People have been complaining for years that there are too many homers in the game. Those people should have loved this one, as three balls hit by Mets hitters were probably home runs in a warmer time or with a normal baseball. Eduardo Escobar, Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso all squared up balls that should have left the yard but instead landed in Seattle gloves.
The Mets jumped out early and had runners on second and third with no outs in the first. They were only able to cash one run, on a sac fly by Francisco Lindor, which turned out to be their entire offensive output for the evening. The Mets had chances to score in both the fifth and seventh innings but could not put more runs on the board.
Max Scherzer retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed just 1 R in 7 IP. It was reminiscent of a Jacob deGrom start, where he pitched great, got a no-decision and the team lost. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all. At least Adam Ottavino got a scoreless inning…
Clearly the team is in an offensive lull. I’d like to see some shake-up. Lead off Jankowski, bat Nimmo 3 a game. Sit Esco. Drop Lindor. Get bold Run.
Gut Reaction: it was a waste of a fine effort from Scherzer. It is difficult to win when the hitting goes 0-5 in RISP. The series winning streak is in jeopardy.
The switch hitters aren’t hitting, The designated hitters aren’t hitting. The catchers aren’t hitting. Maybe Guillorme and Jankowski should get a start.
OFer I get it ,Lindorhas been anAll Star,he plays good defense and he makes 30 million ayear. But maybe he should bat lower in the lineup. Bat him 7th. for a while and move McNeil to third.
