No one should be subjected to a doubleheader at Coors Field. The Mets didn’t play particularly well in either game and should be considered lucky to get away with a split. They took the first game, 5-1, and got trounced in the second, 11-3
Starling Marte returned from the bereavement list and homered on the first pitch he saw, giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead. Marte also made a few nice running catches in right field. But with all of the territory to cover in Coors, that’s not a huge surprise. The Mets added two more runs in the second inning but didn’t do much after that.
Four runs in 16 innings isn’t going to win you a lot of games in Denver. Hopefully, the offense shows up better in the Sunday finale.
Bullpen management was a little strange. Up four runs in the first game with few innings remaining seems to indicate not using top line relievers.
Maybe that’s when Medina, Shreve, Holderman should have been used. Get an inning out of each and save the bullets for the next games. Using Lugo for two innings puts him out for the weekend.
Mets bullpen remains the team’s weak link. Really not one guy is a sure thing in a tight game. I do like Trevor Williams though, despite the two HRs. The next month will be a major test for Buck. Lindor has to start acting like a number 3 hitter.
Gut Reaction: to get a split was expected. They they had a lead in the first game Showalter want make sure of the win so he used his front line relievers. He didn’t know what to expect from Williams in Game 2. This is the way it is to going be for next two months.
Marte is heating up. Davis got two hits and Guillorme was solid again.
