The Mets pitched well enough to win but their bats were late in arriving from the East Coast, as they fell to the Dodgers, 2-0, in the opening of the four-game series against the first-place Dodgers. It was the first time this season that the Mets were shut out.

The Mets managed just three hits and a walk – a far cry from what they had been doing this past week against second-division clubs in Philadelphia and Washington.

Certainly, it was good to see the pitchers hold their own against a Dodgers squad that leads the majors in run differential. Taijuan Walker pitched in and out of trouble all night and his 5.2 IP, 2 ER outing was pretty much a best-case scenario. And Colin Holderman and Chasen Shreve kept LA off the board in the final 2.1 IP.

But you can’t win if you don’t score. Hopefully Francisco Lindor returns to the lineup and the hitters give a better showing after having a full day to adjust to being on the opposite coast.

Good pitching always beats good hitting, so great pitching will not be beat. The Mets are coming with their worst four starters while the Dodgers have their best four going. Plus, the Dodgers have their full squad while the Mets are missing their best player. Walker stepped up, time for Bassitt to do the same and give the team a chance. Alonso isn’t going to see an inside fastball so he better adjust to curveballs away.

That framing is weird. Bassitt is one the Mets worst four pitchers? No doubt we re entering this series a bit shorthanded but I dont think the pitching matchup are all that lopsided. Urias just lost to the pirates after all.

      We ‘ll get em tonight.

Never said bad about Bassitt or anyone, but my point: deGrom, Scherzer, Megill and Carrasco aren’t facing them. Carrasco is the WAR leader and the other three are aces. Bassitt is good, but…. Then you lose your best player to a door accident…

The idea that Megill, with 25 starts in the majors and a 4.49 ERA, is an ace is one that can’t be taken seriously.

Other than the last start where he was hurt, I think he stepped up quite a bit this year. “Ace” may be a bit premature, but he has been probably the best starter outside of Scherzer up until that start. Let’s hope for that kind of career.

Going to the west coast and playing a game without a day off is not easy, especially when you have to play the Dodgers. I would be happy with 5-5 on this road trip.

      +1

We’d probably all take a 2-2 split with the Dodgers. Mets got zero breaks and the game was close. If this team is playoff bound, then they rebound and play good baseball tonight.

Love to see Bassitt turn in a good game. He needs to reassert himself as the quality pitcher we all suspect he is.

Walker did pretty well. Aside from a few long flyouts, there were not many balls hit sharply that I can recall. Taylor and Betts two solid base hits each.
    Holderman looked great again.

GKR during the game that the Dodgers average exit velocity was 94mph. The guys said another fact of how high that is, but I don’t recall.

52 games without being shutout, last in the majors this year. Another great Metsian accomplishment for 2022.

The ’86 team went 85 games without being shut out. Dang.
