Chris Bassitt shook off a recent stretch of poor pitching to throw eight shutout innings, leading the Mets to a 4-0 win over the Brewers Tuesday night at Citi Field.
The Brewers came in scuffling and Bassitt attacked them right away with his fastball, setting the tone early. And the Mets’ offense responded in kind, putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the first and forcing the Brewers’ starter to throw 37 pitches in the frame.
Brandon Nimmo started the game with a double and scored on an RBI single by Pete Alonso, one of two RBIs in the game for the Mets’ first baseman. Alonso now has 59 RBIs on the season, tied for the 15th-most by any Met in the first half of the season. There are still 30 games left before the All-Star break, which gives Alonso a shot to break David Wright’s franchise-record of 74 RBIs in the first half of the season, a mark he set in 2006.
The loss makes the Brewers 2-11 in their last 13 games, and they’ve been shut out four times in that span. The Mets are certainly catching the Brewers at the right time. The win allowed the Mets to remain five games ahead of the Braves, who recorded their 13th-straight win.
Gut Reaction: Bassitt pitched a gem and Showalter let him pitch 8 innings and 109 pitches. I like the concept.
Bassitt said that it was his fault that Nido and Mazeika we’re not on the same page previously. They had a meeting to iron things out and the results speak for themselves. It was an honest interview and not the fluff that you would expect. Bassitt is it upfront guy.
Marte’s tagging up and going to second produces the run that prevented Diaz from being used. Little things matter.
Nimmo’s catch was spectacular. And they turned three tough double plays. Their team defense is so good. LGM
Hard not to like this team. Buck uses everyone. Like replacing hot-hitting JDD with Nick Plummer. Plummer had some nice swings, could pay off when it matters. These little details help fill out the wholeness of the team. JD and Canha will be back in there, but everyone sees Buck including everyone, and that builds team spirit.
Nimmo had a great game, infield played well, Bassitt outstanding… a team effort. Lets win Peterson’s game against Cy Young tonight!
Crisp game. I think it was played in under 2 hr 40m. Much needed effort by Bassitt.
Mets are 15-4 btw in games started by McGill, Peterson, and Williams. Our depth pitchers. Keep it going tonight.
Time to sign up Nimmo, Bassitt, Alonso, and Diaz for future seasons.
What are the chances that Big Pete will break the all-time Mets RBI record for a season held jointly by Piazza and Wright (124)? He already is tied for 3rd place with Ventura at 120.
