The Marlins used three hits and an error in the top of the 10th inning to score two runs, leading to a 2-0 win over the Mets and a split of the four-game series.
It was a billed as a pitcher’s duel and it did not disappoint, as Sandy Alcantara and Taijuan Walker each threw seven scoreless innings. The Marlins had two good chances to score against Walker while the Mets had one against Alcantara. But the pitchers came up big each time to exit unscathed.
Remember when we were worried about Walker and his lack of strikeouts? He had 7 Ks in 7 IP today. In his last six games, Walker has a 1.85 ERA with 43 Ks in 39 IP.
The bullpens came thru on both sides to take us to extra innings.
In their half of the 10th, Brandon Nimmo drove one to wall in right field, just missing on an attempt to tie the game. Mark Canha drew a two-out walk to bring up Francisco Lindor, who went up 2-0 on the count. If he kept the bat on his shoulder, he would have walked. Instead, he swung on three straight pitches and struck out to end the game.
The Mets ended up 0-7 with RISP and they left 10 men on base.
It is easy to be happy over being in first place. But, it ticks me off that they split a series with the Marlins. They were lucky it was a split. They easily could have lost three out of four, while the Braves keep trucking along. Lead down to a game and a half.
I’m sorry, but I dont think this team is built for the long haul. Can’t be giving away games with Rheumatoid Braves behind you.
I am looking forward to playing the Braves and seeing Scherzer kick it off. Winning two out of three would be terrific.
Lindor strike out for final out was an extremely disappointing at bat. Especially on the 2-0 pitch, he looked like a little leaguer that decided he would swing no matter what. I have been hard on Lindor. I know it isn’t his fault that he got a max deal, hey, more power to him. He is a really good player for sure. But, from what I’ve seen, which is not a small sample, he is not a #3 hitter. Cahna, who is much less talented, is better suited for the 3-hole. Lindor just had too many poor at bats, especially in circumstances that are high stress for the pitcher.
Gut Reaction: the offense is sputtering and doesn’t hit with runners in scoring position.
Walker is pitching like an ace. Diaz is pure dominance. Lindor and Guillorme can turn a double play superbly. They are a joy to watch.
McNeil has family leave, Marte is day by day, and McCann, and his handling the pitching staff, will be out for an extended period.
I hope they can take two from the Braves. LGM
