The Mets belted three homers to build a 7-1 lead and cruised to a 7-3 win over the Braves Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta, winning the three-game series.
Eduardo Escobar gave the Mets the early lead when he smacked a homer to right, which went 426 feet, in the second inning, giving Chris Bassitt a 1-0 lead. Francisco Lindor extended the advantage to 4-0 with a three-run shot in the third. Mark Canha made it 5-0 with a solo shot in the sixth. The Mets added two more in the seventh, with the big hit being an opposite field RBI double by cleanup hitter Luis Guillorme.
Meanwhile, Bassitt turned in his fifth straight strong start. After being knocked around in late-May, early-June, Bassitt has given the Mets a great effort in his last five games. With today’s 6 IP, 1 ER outing, Bassitt has gone 33.2 IP and allowed just 9 ER, good for a 2.41 ERA.
Mets relievers allowed two homers in the final three innings but the game was well in hand by that point. The Braves scored eight runs in the series, with all runs coming via the long ball. They hit four solo shots and two 2-run homers.
The Mets needed to win at least one game in this series in order to maintain their divisional lead. Instead, they won two games and extended their lead to 2.5 games. They went into Atlanta without three starting position players – ok, one of them was James McCann – played a team that was red-hot and took two of the three games.
That seems like an excellent outcome.
great statement win. but in reality the mets simply did what they have done all year. start strong in the series, and win the rubber game. they’ve done it against weak and strong competition all season long. the braves on the other hand have played few games against the caliber pitching the mets have, and the mets approach really wore down the atlanta starters. can’t wait for the 5 game set in August. hopefully we go into Chicago and avoid a letdown. 3 of 4 going into the break is a must.
Another great throw from his knees for Tomas Nido throwing out Acuna trying to steal with none out in the first
Gut Reaction: Lindor had the homerun that set the tone and saved a run with a strong throw in the hole to end a Braves threat and end the inning. Instead of first and third with a run scoring, the Mets were in the dugout. Bassitt pitched good. Maybe, I hope, that Escobar and Canha homeruns are a sign for increased power for them both in the second half.
Another series win. They are so consistent. Now let’s win the final series against the Cubs before the All-Star break. LGM
Kudos to the Mets. This series win was very big for the team. Missing two all stars and their starting catcher, on the road, the won behind their ace and got a huge three run HR from their SS. A big bounce back win in the rubber game. All the starters pitched very good. Diaz was electric. Hopefully Buck will keep them from avoiding a letdown and have them go strong to the break.
Taking 2 of 3 in Atlanta was huge. Nice to see some guys picking up the slack like Canha. Luis hits cleanup, well until Marte returns, and gets a big hit. Still hard to keep his glove off the diamond. Our starters were great. Now as far as the Cubs, we throw Cookie, Walker and then Max in the first three. They must be shaking in their cleats at Wrigley. Time to make a run.
With Max, two of three. Without Max, maybe one of three. Add in deGrom and we are much stronger.
