Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Williams combined on a shutout and the Mets’ hitters had five of their 12 hits go for extra-bases en route to an 8-0 blanking of the Cubs Thursday night in Chicago.

It was the third straight solid start for Carrasco, who threw six scoreless innings with six strikeouts. In his last three games, Carrasco has allowed just 3 ER in 17.1 IP. He raised his record on the year to 10-4.

Meanwhile, the Mets gave him an early lead, as they scored a run in the first inning and added three more in the second. The Mets tacked on another run in the fifth and then they broke out the long ball in the later innings, with Brandon Nimmo cracking a solo homer in the sixth and Pete Alonso delivering a two-run blast in the eighth.

Williams gave the rest of the bullpen the night off, as he threw three scoreless innings to finish up. The Cubs loaded the bases in the ninth inning but Williams got Yan Gomes to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game, giving the Mets their 13th shutout of the season. The 2021 Mets had just eight shutouts all season.

The Mets have three more game in this series with the Cubs, with all three being day games.

Gut Reaction: this was a dominating win. It started off with Lindor knocking in the first run and ended up with Alonso hitting a two-run homerun. Carrasco and Williams provided good pitching.Williams got the save because he finished the game and pitched three or more innings. He is a valuable piece for the bullpen. Let’s keep rolling to the All-Star break. LGM

Chicago is in shambles. How the third base coach didn’t send that runner in the ninth inning is beyond me. Their hitters killed every worm in the infield. Corrasco had it easy. Hope if stays like that all weekend. Mazeika with the big hit to open up the lead. And I would say Marte has been more of a table setter than Nimmo has been.

DeGrom threw four innings and should be back after the break; wow, I feel like it’s a dream. Now to find a reliever and another bat.

Edit: seems like Trevor May will face live batters on Sunday according to Tim Healey. Well, I can’t let that change my approach at the deadline, the Mets don’t have too many reliable options. I think Dom Smith is gone.

Loved seeing Trevor Williams finish the game. He could be an x factor out of the pen in the 2nd half.

Yes, I agree. It will be interesting to see if once deGrom returns and gets stretched out if the Mets will use Williams in something besides a long relief role.
