The Mets used a variation of the old Earl Weaver theme, riding pitching defense and three homers to a 4-0 win over the Marlins Saturday night in Miami. It was the fifth-straight win for the Mets and ran their season record to 63-37
Carlos Carrasco was on target all night, as he allowed just four hits in 7.2 innings en route to his 100th career win. Seth Lugo came on to get the final four outs and complete the combo shutout, the 14th time this season the Mets have blanked the opposition.
Jeff McNeil got the Mets on the board in the third inning with his fifth homer of the season. Francisco Lindor and J.D. Davis both homered in the eighth inning, with Davis’ shot being a 444-foot blast to center field. Earlier, Lindor drove home the Mets’ second run with an RBI single.
The Mets go for a sweep of the three-game series Sunday at 1:40
Four in a row. If tomorrow they make it five, they then get the snoozing Nationals for three games while the Braves host the surging and difficult Phillies. Let’s say the Mets run the streak to 8 when the Braves come to town and then beat up a bit, the Braves could leave town seven days from now down seven or eight games and there goes that good vibe they accumulated in June.
Corrasco has become the pitcher the Mets thought they were getting last year. JD Davis, where was that all year??
5 in a row with 6 on the table with the sweep. Hard to believe this is only the 2nd time all season we’ve won as many as 5 in a row.
I fully expect to enter the Braves series on a 9 game winning streak up by at least 5 games.
Gut Reaction: Carrasco topped his Marvelous July with this gem. I really wanted to see him get a shutout. He only threw 93 pitches. There were good signs in the victory. Lugo had a good appearance. Escobar and another extra base hit. Davis hit a monster home run. McNeil had a multi-hit game. Lindor has a .910 OPS in July. Life is good. Let’s go for the sweep. LGM
