If you bailed on this one after the early rain delay, pat yourself on the back, you made the right call. On a night where nearly everything went wrong, the Braves trounced the Mets, 13-1, Monday night in Atlanta.
The biggest news is that Carlos Carrasco left the game with tightness in his left side. Carrasco returned to the mound after a 55-minute rain delay but left clutching his side after recording the final out in the second inning.
There weren’t many highlights, so let’s bullet list them:
- Jeff McNeil had a 4-hit game with two doubles
- Brandon Nimmo had a 2-hit game
- Mark Canha had a double
- Darin Ruf became the first position player in Mets history to record two scoreless innings
Thanks for always posting even when you reluctantly have to report that they came, they played, they stunk. And another player went down. It’s great that we’ve rarely heard those words this season and thankfully when we did it was describing another team, like those we will face after this stretch against the playoff teams. Tomorrow is another day. Walker, Scherzer, deGrom the next three. Feel good about that.
I agree with all 6986 said, and want to add that I didn’t feel strongly today about this matchup for all the reasons I wrote yesterday and also: a pissed off Braves team, a scoffed Strider, playing the first game in Atlanta, and Carrasco on the hill away from home and against mostly righties. I’m hoping the laugher took a bit of the edge off the Braves and that Taijuan Walker is also pissed off from last week and is holding a grudge. Then, Scherzer and DeGrom and by then let’s see how the Braves do. They are a good team with prospects coming out of their ears, like where did these AA kids, Grissom and Harris, come from and what’s in AAA?
Hope Escobar can heal and cover third base because it appears Guillorme won’t be back before late September…. FWIW, I agree with not bringing up Baty or anyone yet, but if I did it would be Blankenhorn.
All season the team has had streaks where they looked unbeatable and then weeks of flatness. I hope I am wrong, but my gut tells me that we have a week or two of flatness coming up. I thought McNeil’s hustling “triple” would be a wake-up call but it wasn’t. My take is that if we can get to Sept with a division lead we will have the schedule in our favor in Sept with some call-up reinforcements too. I think the key is that there are no injuries to any of the core players.
