Jacob deGrom was his usual terrific self, pitching the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies Thursday night at Citi Field in the opening of a 10-game homestand.
deGrom retired the first 13 batters he faced before giving up an infield single. He struck out nine and finished with 6 IP and 1 ER, lowering his ERA to 2.15 and raising his record to 3-1.
Seth Lugo had an eventful seventh inning, loading the bases but striking out the side. With the heart of the Rockies’ order due up in the eighth, Buck Showalter went to Edwin Diaz. The Mets’ relief ace allowed two baserunners but held the Rockies scoreless. Adam Ottavino pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save of the year.
All of the Mets’ offense came in the third inning. Francisco Lindor came up with two runners on base and delivered an RBI groundout. Pete Alonso followed with his first home run in forever to give the Mets a 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Mets had other chances but went 2-10 with RISP and left nine men on base.
Gut Reaction: deGrom pitched masterly. In the beginning of the year, we were awed by the way Scherzer was pitching and still is pitching ….but….deGrom is from a different universe.
The Rockies didn’t turn a double play and that cost them. They did not take into account of Marte’s speed. Then, on a 3-0 pitch, they groove a beach ball to Alonso that he hit it to the ocean. That’s why the Rockies can’t win games, no attention to detail. (There is other reasons too). The Mets wouldn’t have won this game if they were playing a good team but they did win and increased their lead to two games. LGM
Got to beat a team like the Rockies and there is no reason we should not be thinking sweep with the rotation we put out there or at least 3 out of 4. The lack of timely hitting is still haunting them. Nice to see Baty get a hit and also display some better glove work. If I were him I’d take 200 grounders a day. This is now his position to lose and I hope he makes the most of it. How about 36 straight starts giving up 3 or less earned runs for Jake. If the Mets win he will stay, otherwise I think we he might jump to a team with better hitting. Would hate to see him in Dodger blue or worse pitching across town. Bassitt has been on a role and expect that to continue tonight. LGM
