The Mets scored three runs in each of the first three innings and coasted to a 9-2 win over the Nationals in the final game of the regular season Wednesday night. The victory gave the Mets 101 wins, the second-best mark in franchise history. And it left them tied with the Braves for the top mark in the NL East. However, the Mets go in as the Wild Card because after getting swept in Atlanta last weekend, the Braves had the better head-to-head record.
Buck Showalter gave Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo the night off but the bottom of the order made sure they wouldn’t be missed in this game. Both Mark Canha and James McCann belted 3-run homers to pace the Mets’ attack. McCann had three hits in the game, which no one saw coming. Francisco Lindor had a three-run double to account for the Mets’ remaining runs.
Mychal Givens came off the IL and was used as an opener. Trevor Williams came on in the second inning and gave a 6 IP, 2 ER performance. It was enough to earn him the win. It was also enough to make him likely to be left off the roster in the Wild Card round. Trevor May and Joely Rodriguez closed things out with a scoreless inning apiece.
The Mets outscored the Nationals, 21-4, in the final three games of the year. Too bad they didn’t either hit like that or pitch like that in the previous series.
May all their remaining games end this way: coasting to wins!
Welp an amazing regular season. Tied for 3rd best record in baseball. 24 gane turnaround from last season. 9-10 against the braves with the braves getting the extra home game in the season series and playinf 5 fewer games against teams better than .500. Bring it on Darvish.
Can’t wait for tomorrow night! Let’s go Mets!!
