The Mets offense finally showed up in the getaway day game versus the Brewers but the pitching was still a big problem. The Mets had leads of 1-0 and 6-4 but they suffered their third-straight loss, as the Brewers had a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth and earned the sweep with a 7-6 win Wednesday afternoon.
Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor each had big days. Alonso hit two homers and drove in four, while Lindor had a three-hit game with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. But it wasn’t enough because of another sub-par outing from the pitchers.
David Peterson struggled mightily with command and he allowed 5 BB and 5 H in 4 IP. John Curtiss and David Robertson had good outings in relief; Drew Smith and Adam Ottavino did not, with the latter giving up the final blow.
The inability of so many pitchers to throw strikes while avoiding the heart of the plate is maddening. Maybe the pitchers collectively do not like the mound in Milwaukee. Anyway, at least it was three games and not four and they don’t have to go back for the rest of the regular season.
Hopefully Citi Field will cure what ails everyone so far in the early going. It would certainly help the offense if they could quit beating the ball into the ground. Luis Guillorme was the worst offender, with four grounders to the second baseman. But he had plenty of help, as the Mets had 17 outs come via groundouts.
The pitching on this team scares me. A lot. Like, sleeping with one eye open scary.
That Narvaez leads the team in hitting is distressing. We can’t even bring up the injured Baty to make up for getting nadda out of 3B. Not time to panic but starting to get worried. Bring on the Fish
Gut Reaction: a disappointing loss because they came back from a deficit of 4-1 and blew a two-run lead. Peterson was the culprit giving up five runs in only four innings which he threw 92 pitches with five walks. Alonso and Lindor broke out of their slumps and that is a good sign. A bad sign was Luke Voit stole second base without a throw with two outs. Someone was sleeping at the wheel.
Here is what is distressing. Is Scherzer near the end of the line? Same for Verlander. Why didn’t the Mets plan to break in at least two of their prized young future rookies? Last year the Braves bring up Strider. And now the have Jared Shuster and Dylan Dodd. Where are the Mets young potential stud pitchers? Oh, that’s right, we don’t have any.
Well Shuster didn’t really shine too brightly in his start and is now back in the minors. Dodd looks like he is more ready for the majors. As for the Mets, they haven’t had too much success in Milwaukee anyway but it would have been nice to take yesterday’s game. A silver lining is that Alvarez will be available if Narvaez goes on the injured list.
