The Mets fell behind by two runs before they came to bat. But they pecked away, scoring a single run in five different innings, and came away with a 5-2 win, taking the series against the Padres in the process.
Juan Soto crushed a 2-run HR to open the scoring in the top of the first but that’s all of the runs they would score in the game. Meanwhile, the light-hitting Mets rallied thanks to some power of their own.
Brandon Nimmo drove home the Mets’ first run with a double. Nimmo hit the ball hard but got some good luck as two Padres outfielders had a miscommunication over who was going to catch the ball. Francisco Lindor tied the game with a homer in the third inning and Pete Alonso gave the Mets the lead for good when he went deep in the fifth.
Tylor Megill settled in nicely after giving up the homer and may have still had gas in the tank when he was removed with after five innings. With Soto due up in the sixth inning, Buck Showalter brought lefty Brooks Raley into the game. And when Soto came back up in the seventh, Showalter brought in his best reliever, David Robertson. Both of those relievers kept Soto in the park and the Padres off the board.
Adam Ottavino pitched the ninth inning and avoided Soto completely with a game-ending double play with Soto in the on-deck circle. He earned his first save of the season.
Nimmo had a three-hit game, while Alonso and Tommy Pham each recorded two hits. In all, the Mets had eight hits and seven walks and showed signs of life offensively to go with a solid outing from five different relievers.
Gut Reaction: Robertson has been very impressive and he saved the game in the 7th. In the end, Showalter bullpen use for this series worked out.
Megill’s start, along with Peterson start should put the pressure on Carrasco.
Cahna isn’t a fifth hitter but Lindor is with McNeil batting 3rd.
The Mets have have three the players that are defensively first players and that is one too many especially when the offense is struggling.
It was another series win. That is a good habit.
Canha is a 10 home run 60 rbi kind of guy. I like the guy, but we can do better. Same with Guillorme, love his glove but no bat. Vogelbach is a limited DH. No field position, slow runner. Need to shake the team up. Went into the season pretty much with the same lineup that ended the 22 season. Happy we won, but
.500 ball is not going to cut it. We need Verlander back and maybe Carrasco gets dropped from the rotation.
Got to be pleased with their fielding that’s also critical to their success. Megill stepped up and we got the offense we lacked last night. The pen was great and kudos to Buck for pulling the right strings. A 4-2 home stand and two series wins and these were the Padres – and they have one scary lineup. Nice night.
