It takes a lot for the Mets to win a game this season. Friday night it took Brandon Nimmo scoring from first on a single and four relievers to deliver four hitless innings. That combo led to a 3-2 win over the Nationals in D.C.
The Mets stranded seven runners on base in the first three innings. After stranding one more in the fifth, they had the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth. But Francisco Lindor hit a single on a 3-2 pitch. The full count let Nimmo get a head start from first and he came all the way around to score the game-winning run.
Tylor Megill started for the Mets and had a really nice curve ball working but still struggled to get strikes and put away hitters. He pitched five innings and allowed two runs, one earned. With the Mets going ahead for good in the sixth, Megill picked up the win.
Jeff Brigham and Adam Ottavino held the fort in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Buck Showalter called on David Robertson to get a six-out save but he was unable to finish the job, as he was removed with two outs in the ninth and a runner on base with his pitch count at 40.
Drew Smith came on and got the final out and recorded his first career save.
Nimmo, Jeff McNeil and Starling Marte had two hits apiece. Nimmo also walked and was robbed of an extra-base hit by a nice leaping catch by the Nats’ right fielder in the fourth inning.
The Mets evened their record in one-run games at 6-6 and moved within a game of .500 with the victory.
Nice baserunning by Nimmo, not only did he score from first on the single, he scored standing up
That bases loaded 2 out situation started off with 2nd and 3rd and no out and they nearly blew it. 9 singles out of 10 hits. And Robertson got some help from the ump in the 9th. Wake me when they ve won 3 or 4 in a row.
I know you are being sarcastic, but that is the definition of a fair weather fan. I hope to wake you up on Monday. Let Go Mets.
Gut Reaction: it seems like a long time that someone delivered a clutch hit with men on base. Lindor did it last night and the result was a win. Megill struggle because of his four walks he issued but kept them in the game for the Lindor hit. Showalter did a nice job of removing Robertson in the 9th inning. Most managers would have kept him in, after all, he is your closer and it would be difficult to second the move. But Showalter isn’t most managers. This game was a hard fought battle and the Mets persevered.
Nice game by Alvarez behind the plate and the snap throw to first almost snagged the runner. Another 2 hits by Nimmo now hitting .317 in the lead off spot. Five strong from Megill was sorely needed. And what a job by the pen. Yes these are only the 16-22 Nats but then again we sit at an inconceivable 19-20. Lucceshi’s turn to step up as Carrasco’s return must be near.
