The Mets’ offense was once again non-existent, and they dropped their second-straight game to the Blue Jays, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field.
The Mets scored first in this game, as slumping Daniel Vogelbach delivered his first extra-base hit in eons, with an RBI double to put the Mets up, 1-0. After that, they failed again and again to get the big hit. The Mets put up six hits in the game but went 0-11 with runners in scoring position.
Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Brett Baty, who all came into the game scuffling mightily, went a combined 0-11 with six Ks. Lindor needs a day off and Baty should be ceding playing time to Eduardo Escobar.
Tylor Megill pitched in and out of trouble all game but somehow pitched five scoreless innings. But Buck Showalter tried to coax another inning out of him, which didn’t quite work out. Megill gave up a double and a walk to start the sixth inning. After a fly out, Showalter went to the pen and brought in Brooks Raley to face a lefty. Raley got the lefty but the next batter hit a ball that Lindor was unable to handle, which allowed the tying run to score.
Both teams squandered chances the following two innings until the Jays pushed the go-ahead run across in the ninth. David Robertson allowed a one-out single and the player stole second base. Robertson got the second out, bringing up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the plate with first base open. The Mets opted to go after Guerrero and he delivered a bad-ball double for the game-winning run.
In their last nine games outside of Colorado, the Mets have scored just 27 runs. And 10 of those came in one game against the Cubs.
6,5,4,4,6. 25. Met hits on this home stand through 5 games.
Still cheered when Vogelbach got his hit. We need some offensive help and what better time than putting Mauricio at 2B. And yes Lindor needs a day off, and Escobar deserves more time on the field. The Jays are a good team but 1 run each game will rarely win against anyone. On to tomorrow.
Gut Reaction: 0-11 tells it all. It was a wasted effort by Megill who had a gutsy but successful outing. Lindor needs a rest. Baty should relinquish playing time to Escobar. The offense needs a shot in the arm. Narvaez and Mauricio might help. It seems like the Mets are sputtering this season. When they pitch good they don’t hit and when they hit they don’t pitch good.
As a scholar of the Mets, Metsense, you know that “this is the way” (stealing from Mando!). DeGrom could pitch his heart out and get zero run support followed by a ND, then some back end starter goes 5 1/3 but the Mets score 8 and win 8-6. It’s very cruel this team. The team slumping is also something I cannot get over.
Last night watching the outside chase swings was absolutely shocking. Marte, Lindor, and Alonso were all leaning over straining to hit pitches in the opposite batters box. Even if they hit the ball it couldn’t have been more than a swinging bunt. Right now it seems we are looking at “trying too hard” rather than keeping calm. In that regard they could use some influence of The Statue, who hardly swings at anything.
