The Mets scored three runs in the first inning and Tylor Megill turned in his best start in ages, leading the Mets to a 6-1 win over the Cardinals Friday night in Citi Field.

Brett Baty delivered the big hit in the first inning, with a two-run double. He helped turn around things after Francisco Lindor hit into a 1-2-3 double play that made it look like the Mets might squander a bases loaded, no out situation. Tommy Pham followed with an RBI single, the first of two RBIs for him in the game.

But as big as Baty’s hit was, getting good results from Megill was an even bigger relief. He allowed just four hits and one run over six innings. Additionally, Megill notched seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter. And the Mets ran their record to an unreal 19-1 when their starter goes at least six innings.

Starling Marte and Jeff McNeil joined Pham with two hits apiece, with the M & M boys each scoring two runs. Daniel Vogelbach added the cherry on top with a HR to the Coca-Cola corner, his first homer since May 7.

Big step up by Megill. Could this be the real Vogelbach? Scoring early is a good advantage for your pitcher. Hitting is contagious – I really think so. Heard Mauricio hit a couple of HRs playing in left for Syracuse. Not sure he’s better at 2nd then McNeil so LF would be fine. #freemauricio

Gut Reaction: this game was a perfect storm for the Cardinals. Megill pitched 6 innings without walking anybody. Vogelbach hits a homerun. Baty has a 2 out, 2 run double and the middle relief pitchers didn’t give up a run. The Mets were better than a trifecta. I guess it wasn’t in the cards for the Cards last night.
