Max Scherzer finally pitched like an ace and the offense did just enough to push home the winning run in the 10th inning, lifting the Mets to a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon against the Dodgers at Citi Field.
Scherzer allowed just one hit and no runs in seven innings and he handed the bullpen a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the pen immediately blew it, with Trevor Gott allowing a run before being bailed out by Brooks Raley.
Meanwhile, the Mets took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. They loaded the bases with one out and Brandon Nimmo got the run home on a ground out. They had a chance in the bottom of the ninth when Daniel Vogelbach singled. D.J. Stewart pinch ran for him and proceeded to steal second base while Starling Marte struck out. But Brett Baty whiffed to send the game to extra innings.
David Robertson, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, stayed in for the 10th and stranded the zombie runner at third base. In the Mets’ half of the 10th, pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme hit a double for the game-winning hit.
Scherzer lowered his ERA to 3.99 for the season, while Robertson got his down to 1.96 while picking up his fourth win of the year.
Gut Reaction: it is hard to manage a win when they only score two runs. But because of outstanding pitching by Scherzer, Raley and Robertson they scored a win.
Guillorme with his .754 OPS against RHP was pinch hitting for Canha who had a .715 against RHP . After to failed bunts, Louie hit a double to win the game.
It was a nice, crisp and well pitching game.
Nice to see the win. Max maybe is auditioning for the Dodgers who could surely use him with Kershaw down. They likely have some decent prospects to offer. Happy for Luis. On to the Sox.
And I second the remarks from NYM6986. Even eat half his remaining salary if it means getting some decent prospects. Time to start shopping the ballplayers around; including Alonso & McNeil.
I agree with you Footballhead. Scherzer to the Dodgers. Let’s get some good prospects. We need a youth movement. McNeil won’t have a ton of value right now but Alonso does. The Mets have to think twice about investing in Alonso on a long term deal. Now would be the time to trade him. He would bring back a nice haul. I am all for blowing this team up and rebuilding it. Send off Verlander and Scherzer. This team whether this year or next unless really big changes are made can’t compete with the Braves.
