Once again, the Mets’ offense wasn’t up for the challenge. Combined with some shaky defense, the end result was a 3-1 loss to the Yankees Wednesday night in the Bronx. The Mets split the season series, 2-2.
Jose Quintana seemed to be in constant danger but he gave the Mets six innings and a chance to win. But the Mets didn’t do much with their turns at bat and the few times they had a rally, they hit a ball hard right at someone.
It wasn’t their worst performance of the year but at a time where they desperately need to string some wins together, it simply wasn’t enough.
Drew Smith and Trevor Gott looked good, so it was nice to get some solid work from “B” relievers. But when Pete Alonso, Tommy Pham and Jeff McNeil go a combined 0-11, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Mets scored just one run.
Rodon did a good job of not letting us score more runs. Their last three relievers ERAs are under three. Some good D by McNeil. Bring on the Nats!
Mets did barrel up a few but they turned into hard outs. No margin for error, combined with the Yankees as the opponent, make these losses even tougher to take.
Vientos at 3B iffy but it will come down to his bat.
I’ve been advocating that Vientos needs more playing time and yesterday’s loss was largely on his poor fielding. Any loss is tough but I am still in the camp that getting the prospects experience needs to be the priority for the rest of this season. They need to win basically 4 out of 6 games for the rest of the season to have a shot at the WC. Some things look promising. Alonso may be coming around. Verlander is starting to look like Verlander. But Alvarez is cooling off. Max and Cookie continue to not be up to the task. Gott ain’t got it. Vogelbach.
Play the kids everyday, don’t pinch hit for them in tough spots, and let the record fall where it falls.
Gut Reaction: no momentum. 4-4 the their last 8 games.
The defense had taken runs away with McNeil’s homerun robbing catch and gave back runs with Vientos ill advised decision, rookie mistake. At least he got a hit.
In the second start,
Quintana pitched good game, just like his first start, but hasn’t got a win to show for his efforts.
