The Mets rallied for two runs in the eighth inning, one before and one after a 90-minute weather delay, to rally to defeat the Nationals, 2-1, Thursday night at Citi Field.
Kodai Senga started and pitched very but was on the short side of things, having allowed a solo run in his six innings of work. He lowered his ERA for the year to 3.17, good for fourth in the National League.
But David Peterson gave two scoreless innings and picked up the win as the bats finally came alive. It started innocently enough, as Jeff McNeil reached on a squib near the plate. Pete Alonso followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Then Daniel Vogelbach tied the game with a solid single.
When play resumed after the delay, Mark Canha hit a fly down the right field line. The Nationals fielder made a strong throw to the plate, but Alonso slid in just ahead of the attempted swipe tag, putting the Mets in the lead.
David Robertson was warming up before the delay but Brooks Raley came out for the save. He allowed one baserunner but emerged unscathed with his second save of the season, giving the Mets their 48th win of the season.
Nice win as again we didn’t hit much. Narvaez looked awful behind the plate not seeing balls that went astray. Senga continues to be who we hoped he would be.
Gut Reaction: good pitching won this game.
Senga pitch like I’m number one starter. Peterson pitched well as a bulk pitcher. Raley pitched like a closer. Very efficient.
The Mets hitting were fortunate to get two runs with just only a hard hit single.
Now let’s see if they can win two straight.
