Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer in the first inning but the Mets’ offense could muster nothing after that, as they fell to the Cubs, 3-2, Tuesday night at Citi Field.

After the first inning troubles, Jameson Taillon settled down and pitched a great game, with the Mets unable to do much at all against him for the final six innings. The Cubs went to the pen in the eighth inning and the Mets hit a bunch of balls hard but got nothing to show in either of the final two frames.

Carlos Carrasco started for the Mets and pitched all right, giving up two runs in five innings. He made a couple of nice defensive plays, getting the lead runner at third base on a comebacker and picking off a runner from first base, to help himself out. Buck Showalter went to the pen for the sixth inning and the relievers allowed just one run in four innings, as Drew Smith served up a gopher ball for the game-winner.

One night after scoring 11 runs, the Mets’ offense went back into hibernation. You’re not going to win many games when you score just two runs. This one was a winnable game that they just couldn’t pull out. It might have hurt earlier in the year but now it’s just a shrug.

Gut Reaction: blame Pete, he didn’t hit you tonight!
Drew Smith is having a tough year. Earlier this year he was not closing the door when he came into the game. Last night he gave up the home run that was the difference. But recently he has been turning his season around. The last time he gave up a run was July 20th, eight appearances ago.
It was a shrug game so why didn’t Carrasco stay in with 75p and not stress the bullpen?

“Two” not “you” in the first line of the comment.
