The Mets got to face another stiff pitcher and responded by scoring runs in the first six innings of the game, tying a home record set by the 1987 squad. The end result was a 7-2 win over the Pirates, in the first of three at Citi Field.
Carlos Carrasco started for the Mets and, well, he wasn’t exceptionally good. He needed 88 pitches to record nine outs and was lucky to give up just two runs. But as unsuccessful as Carrasco was, the bullpen more than made up for it, as five relievers combined for six shutout innings. Included in that grouping was the 2023 Mets debuts for Tyson Miller and Sam Coonrod. The latter tried to give up a run, as he allowed a hit and a walk, but he fanned two to get out of the jam.
Meanwhile, how about that offense!
The Mets banged out nine hits, including three homers, as Daniel Vogelbach Jonathan Arauz and Brandon Nimmo each left the yard. Nimmo and Francisco Lindor each had two-hit games, while Arauz and Jeff McNeil each drove in two runs.
As you’re reading this, Mark Vientos is down 0-2 in the count and getting ready to strike out. He went 0-4 with two whiffs in the game, as did Francisco Alvarez, the only two starters not to get hits.
Nice contributions from the No-name gang. Arauz – if he keeps up this kind of playing they will be doing the Arauzzzzz howl in the stands. Even Vogelbach does his job. Peterson against Falter tomorrow is really a tossup. One more win and it’s called a winning streak!
