It’s tough to give up double digit walks and win. And the Mets allowed 10 BB and fell to the Pirates, 7-4, Tuesday night at Citi Field.
In addition to the 10 walks, the Pirates also had nine hits and two HBPs. And as crazy as it may seem, this was a 1-1 game after six innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mets had a runner on first with Pete Alonso coming to the plate. But Alonso grounded into a double play to end the inning and the Pirates finally were able to cash in on all of the baserunners they had.
Jose Butto loaded the bases with a double and two walks. Buck Showalter went to Grant Hartwig, who brought his gas can to the mound. He allowed all three of Butto’s runners to score and three of his own.
The Mets rallied back for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, on back-to-back homers by DJ Stewart and Jonathan Arauz. But they could get no more.
David Peterson started the game and he had good stuff but couldn’t locate his pitches at all. In 3.2 IP he had 5 Ks and 6 BB. Peterson needed 91 pitches for 11 outs. He was relieved by Butto, who also had good stuff and deserved better than his final line.
The Mets look for the series win on Wednesday, in a game with a 1:10 start.
I too was happy with how Butto pitched in relief. Maybe he found a role…. As for Peterson, I have talked so much crap about him in the past that there is nothing left to say. Still, I’d let him make his next start and see if can figure it out. After all, he only gave up one run with all that traffic.
The Mets gave up 19 baserunners in 9 innings… or had a WHIP of 2.11 for this game. That’s terrible, but honestly, I don’t care about that.
On my mind the whole night was trying to figure out why the Mets paid Nimmo $200MM to play CF and the past two nights he has been in LF. This is the first year of that contract and they already deem a AAAA player to be more deserving of that position? Boy the Mets are stupid.
Nimmo is playing with a tight muscle in his leg that is why he
Is playing leftfield.
Thank you Metsense. I see.
It was even worse, Gus, as there were 2 HBPs, meaning there were 21 men on base.
Peterson reminds me of Matz, but with more gumption in tough spots. That said, he really needs to solve his up and away issues by the end of this exhibition season.
Peterson has been a disappointment this season as it was his time to put up or shut up. If we had some more real pitchers he’d prob still be back at Syracuse. And comparing him as a better version of Matz doesn’t make him any easier to watch. Love my new favorite Arauz both at the bat and in the field. If they are not going to bring up Mauricio, then put Arauz at second for the rest of the season and keep McNeil in RF. Locastro is a good defender in Cf so we lose nothing by shifting Nimmo to left where he presents with a stronger arm. Nimmo’s contract is a bargain considering all he brings to the table. Walks, hit batsman, wild pitch – that inning was a wipeout, but not dissimilar to what the Mets had done to the Braves in the one game they salvaged. Would be thrilled to get back to .500 on the season, but not holding my breath. At least it’s another day closer to the winter meetings and free agency.
Gut Reaction: Peterson is an enigma. He is a bulk reliever and a depth starter. He has major league stuff and 2022 he earned a position on the back end of the rotation. He has now digressed.
Hartwig has also digressed. He was awful last night. He has an opportunity this season to establish himself and he is blowing it.
Stewart and Vogelbach are very similar except Stewart at least play the field. I would choose Stewart over Vogelbach as a 26th player on the roster.
Boy, it was very hard to sit through that 7th inning!
