The Mets’ offensive explosion continues, as they banged out 14 hits and six runs en route to a 6-1 win over the Royals Friday night at Citi Field. It was their sixth win in their last eight games and brings them within a game of .500 at 6-7.
Trailing by a run, the Mets tied the game in the third inning with an RBI double by Brandon Nimmo. They added two more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth, with the big hit being a two-run double by Brett Baty.
Pete Alonso capped the scoring with a solo homer in the eighth inning, his fourth of the year.
Luis Severino got his first win as a Met. He gave up a solo homer but that was his only hit allowed in five innings. But it was a slog, as he allowed four walks.
Four relievers closed out the game, allowing just two hits and no runs. Additionally, they combined for 6 Ks and 0 BB.
The Mets’ win snapped a 7-game winning streak – although four of those came against the lowly White Sox – for the Royals and gave the first step in revenge for last year’s sweep in Kansas City that happened right after the trade deadline.
Gut Reaction: Relentless !!!
That’s tremendous!
Listening to the radio the inning Baty doubled in two guys, and Howie Rose was chuckling at the bloops and bleeders that Wacha was giving up. This may not go on for long, but it isn’t so unrealistic. Lindor is cold, Alonso is ok just not clutch yet, Alvarez is cold… it’s Nimmo, McNeil and Baty carrying the team consistently.
I think the Mets might have been lucky having the Royals come in who were bound to lose after a seven game winning streak, but Severino certainly did his part. Bleeps and bloops are all part of the game as is hitting them where they ain’t. DJ’s one hit was not a HR but he knocked in a run. Marte the only one without a knock last night but I still like him batting second. Can’t say enough about the relief pitching – got to give credit to Stearns for bringing so many relievers in hoping someone would pitch well. Baty still strong at the plate and in the field. No longer holding my breath when a ball is hit his way. Even Bader had a couple of hits.
Brian I too was flipping back and forth to the Knicks-Nets game and when they were down I figured it was because they had won three in a row against the Bucks, Bulls and Celtics and were due for a let down. But they came back to win. My other NY teams are having very good seasons and heading to their respective playoffs. Hope the Mets can follow suit.
I panicked! Shame on me. After the 0-5 start I thought they might not reach 500 the whole season. I forgot,it’s early.
