After a two-week run of terrific offense, the Mets ran into a buzz saw in the shape of Tyler Glasnow, who handcuffed them for eight innings en route to a 10-0 win over the Mets Sunday afternoon. While the loss kept the Mets from their first sweep in Los Angeles this century, it was still a series win.

Adrian Houser got the start and put up zeroes in his first two innings. But the second time thru the order was the beginning of his undoing. Houser gave up two runs in the third inning on a two-run homer to Shohei Ohtani. He got past the lower part of the order in the fourth but he did not record an out in the fifth, eventually seeing the Dodgers score six runs that went on his record in the frame.

Houser’s ERA now stands at 7.45 and he’s pitched just 19.1 innings in his four starts this season.

Meanwhile, the offense managed just seven hits – all singles – versus Glasnow, who struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. It was so bad that the Mets pulled Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor out of the game early. Their replacements, Tyrone Taylor and Joey Wendle, went 0-4, with Taylor striking out in both of his trips to the plate.

The closest thing to a highlight for the Mets in this game was that they threw out their first baserunner of the season. All it took was Tomas Nido getting the start and a catcher trying to steal.

The Mets finish up their first West Coast swing of the season with a trip to San Francisco for a three-game set against the Giants. The first two games have a 9:45 p.m. start time while the Wednesday matchup will have a 3:45 p.m. start time.

Gut Reaction: Houser has to return it around or else his rotation spot will be lost. Lucchese has a 2.57 ERA in Syracuse.
The silver lining is that the bullpen will be rested for San Francisco.

Hopefully Mendoza knows now that a low-leverage, multi-inning situation like today is the appropriate way to use Tonkin.

Sounds like SRF will be ready soon and the Raley injury buys Tonkin some time. Hartwig goes down when SRF gets activated and when Raley returns, it’ll be decision time. My hope is that Garrett has a few more good games between now and then and makes the decision to pick him to go because he has an option left just silly. And then we’ll see who the club likes better — SRF or Tonkin.

SRF activated, Tonkin DFA’d today. Hartwig was also optioned and Josh Walker called up.

They needed another LH reliever. Does Tonkin get his $$ or is the contract he originally signed null and void?

Answering my own question: If no team claims him on waivers, and he rejects an assignment to the minors by the Mets, he doesn’t get paid by the Mets anymore. I am surprised that this is still a factor, since he was traded to the Twins previously. Very confusing!

The trade is not a factor. Whichever team has him, has the contract.
Its a major league contract anyway, it is a split contract, so it is not (I believe) guaranteed. So any time he spends in the minors would pay him the minor league salary rate ($400,000,prorated).

Glasnow was a major rotation addition by the Dodgers. Never seen him pitch before today. Wow. Jealous. We got whupped – but took two out of three in LA. Let’s see how the team reacts in SF tomorrow night. And it took the third string catcher to throw out a base steeler. Nido will see more time I assume? And we will just have to accept the offensive downside.

I must admit that I quickly became annoyed with that childish ritualistic celebratory gesture performed by the LADs.

Well, after losing the previous two games, leading by ten runs as soon as the 6th inning finally provided the celebratory opportunity

Then I realized that this was actually their kick dance emulation of a famous chorus line

This indicates what the banner on LAD’s City Connect jerseys should say:

    Dodgettes
