The first game of the road trip did not disappoint, as the Mets banged out 22 hits and 14 runs in a 14-2 shellacking of the Rangers Monday night in Texas. It was the first time since 2019 that the Mets eclipsed the 20-hit mark and it was also their sixth-straight victory.
Pete Alonso had an RBI single in the first inning to give the Mets the lead and they proceeded to put the game out of reach in the second, as they put across six runs. The big blow was DJ Stewart’s 3-run homer.
Five Mets had at least three hits. Francisco Lindor was a perfect 4-4 before getting an early end to his night. Brandon Nimmo, Alonso, Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez each had three knocks. Nimmo had a homer, two runs scored and four batted in before he was lifted. Vientos’ big night lifted his AVG to .302 and his OPS to .885 for the season.
The beneficiary of the offensive onslaught was David Peterson, who had really good stuff. Essentially, it was one bad pitch, which resulted in a 2-run homer. But he fanned six and lowered his ERA to 3.97 while running his record to 3-0.
The Mets are now 10-2 in their last 12 games and they’ve scored 78 runs in that span. Offense is fun.
Name nominated Jon Gray as player of the game.

Gray could be Mets MVP so far this season.
The Mets certainly have a “Touch of Gray”.
Gut Reaction: the Mets are rolling. They have 10 position players above 100 OPS+, 2 starting pitchers above 100 ERA+, 1 starting pitcher with 98 ERA+ and 4 relief pitchers above 100 ERA+, 1 relief pitcher at 98 ERA+ on the active roster. It appears that they have an above average team. So far the NL has only 5 teams above .500. Maybe the Mets will achieve .500 before the ASG. They certainly have the personnel to do that.
They seem to be having a reverse of last June, which is fine. While the “old school” in me abhors the fact that as a still sub-500 team they are actually in contention for a playoff spot, I will take watching baseball in October with the Mets on the field rather than them in front of their TVs as well.
This is a hot streak, and they will cool off. The trick is not to fall off the cliff again. Stay close and hope that the next up cycle occurs in mid-September and pushes them into a playoff spot.
There is still plenty wrong with this team about which plenty will have to be done, but a postseason berth is a postseason berth, something we couldn’t even envision talking about three weeks ago.
I don’t live in America anymore so the distance ameliorates the pain psychologically when they lose my perspective is living in Israel is so super real that I can hardly be affected however, having said that it’s a delight for them, and for me vicariously to experience some measure of joy in their success They will continue to have a warm place in my heart and even in my blue and orange soul
