The Mets scored in each of their last five innings to earn a 7-6, come-from-behind victory over the Rangers Tuesday night in Texas. It was the seventh-straight win for the Mets and moved them to within two games of .500 at 35-37.
The Mets got this win thanks to power, as they hit two homers and had two separate run-scoring doubles. Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo had solo homers, while Francisco Alvarez tied the game with a two-run double in the eighth inning and Pete Alonso had the game-winning RBI double in the ninth.
Staked to a 2-1 lead, Luis Severino fell apart in the fifth inning, as he allowed five runs. He ended his night with 6.1 IP, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K and 2 HR. Severino now has a 3.52 ERA and a 4.18 FIP. Additionally, he has a 6.51 K/9, an incredible low mark for a pitcher with a sub-4 ERA.
Three Mets relievers combined for 2.2 scoreless innings. Reed Garrett picked up the win with his 1-2-3 eighth inning. Edwin Diaz allowed a bloop single in the ninth but got a double play and a pop up to pick up his seventh save of the season.
The offense continued to shine for the Mets, as they produced 10 H, 4 BB and 7 R. Vientos and Alvarez led the way with three hits apiece.
Gut Reaction: The Mets are in 7th Heaven. Now let’s put the Rangers behind the Eight Ball ! Garrett won his 7th game and that is fourth in the National League. How fortuitous. Alvarez and the Vientos have back-to-back three hit games. This team is driving with all their cylinders firing.
Look who’s in the playoffs if they started today. The Mets ! Amazing! How fortuitous.

I stand corrected. Thanks Chris.
Loved Iglesias’s turn on the 9th inning DP!
I do believe that was the best game the Mets have played all year.
The question looming is: What becomes of McNeil?
I’m not sure who you define ‘looming’. But to me, that question isn’t really looming just yet. The Mets don’t have anybody in the minors to replace him, and its unlikely that Iglesias continues to perform at this level the rest of the way. Besides, what is there to do with him? He doesn’t have real trade value, they’re not going to cut him when they don’t need the roster space and there’s still 2+ years left on his contract. We also don’t know whether this team will stay in the race or not. For now, McNeil stays on the roster as an overpriced role player (platoon/utility/bench) for now. A month from now the question will be looming, and the situation may have changed.
Dang, how did i miss that Reed Garrett vultured a win during the game.
He now has a comfortable 3 lead in that category vs any other Met pitcher.
