One day after playing a terrific game with the offense and pitching clicking, the Mets figured they’d see how the other half lives. The pitching was lousy, the hitting was sporadic, at best, and the result was an 8-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field Saturday afternoon.

Tylor Megill made the case for a demotion to Syracuse. He lasted just three innings and gave up six runs, all earned. His ERA ballooned to 4.81 with the outing. In his first three games this season, Megill had a 1.69 ERA. In the four starts since, he’s allowed 15 ER in 17.2 IP for a 7.64 ERA.

The Mets struck out 14 times in the game.

J.D. Martinez and Francisco Alvarez each had two hits, with Alvarez hitting a double and a homer. He’s now slashing .284/.337/.455 for the year.

Starling Marte left the game early due to knee soreness. The Mets will try to take the rubber game in the series Sunday night, as the teams square off in the nationally televised ESPN game.

Really, a good case can be made to send Megill and Stewart to Syracuse (or elsewhere?), as well as making McNeil a full-time bench player.

As for Alonso, when (if ever) will he learn to throw properly to a pitcher covering first base, as well as to second base?

Well, just when we were starting to check the standings, reality hits us. I was thinking as I monitored the game on my phone:
    – Are the Mets better than the Cubs?
    – If overall they are close, how good are the Cubs?

Must win game tomorrow. For the record, my opinion is the Mets offense is much better and the pitching isn’t as good.

Was at the game yesterday, Megill was so off from the first batter. You could see the frustration in his body language. It’s been four years of this now… time to send him down & bring up Scott or Butto. Make Megill a reliever & see how that goes

While we should not expect extended seven game winning streaks, we should expect them to start winning some series. Less than 90 games to go in a wildcard chase of under achieving teams in front of us. Seems so stupid in June to even be measuring wildcard races but of course my ESPN app and Mets stats throws it right in your face It might be time for Megill to be at Syracuse and give others a chance to start. Would not be surprised to see him included in a deadline deal. How long do we wait for him to get his act together? .481 ERA. He would not even be on a roster 20 years ago. Like our chances for a series win with Severino on the bump.
