About 10 days ago, I was reading Power Rankings at some since-forgotten site. And it made me mad because they had the Mets at 23. Now, it’s not lost on me how utterly meaningless Power Rankings are in any sport at any time of the year. It’s purely entertainment value and shouldn’t be taken so seriously. But the thought occurred to me – we should do Power Rankings here at Mets360. And here we are.
The plan is to do these Power Rankings the second and fourth Thursday of each month. And joining me in these rankings are Dalton Allison and Gus Livaditis. To get the composite ranking, each of our three lists were given points – 30 to the top spot down to one point for the last spot. The points were then added together and the ranking created. On to the list!
1. Philadelphia Phillies (B2, D1, G3) – They have the most wins in the majors and are second in both runs scored and runs allowed. Gus thinks the back of the rotation is a problem.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (B1, D2, G4) – It doesn’t seem to matter how many injuries they have – the Dodgers are in the conversation for best team in the league at any point in the season
3. New York Yankees (B4, D6, G1) – Injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo have started to show the fragility of this lineup. When healthy, this team can beat anyone. When they don’t have their full complement of player, this team will struggle against solid pitching. (Dalton)
4. Cleveland Guardians (B3, D2, G7) – Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are leading the AL MVP conversation right now, but Steven Kwan could make a unique case. In addition to his typically great ability to get on base, he’s added a slugging element to his game that is propelling Cleveland in the American League. (Dalton)
5. Baltimore Orioles (B7, D5, G2) – A balanced and talented team; not hitting on all offensive cylinders yet. (Gus)
6. Milwaukee Brewers (B5, D4, G8) – They lost their top two starting pitchers and their closer from a year ago. And it doesn’t matter – they just keep winning.
7. Atlanta Braves (B6, D7, G6) – Austin Riley starting to stir offensively; enough pieces to still be dangerous. (Gus)
8. Seattle Mariners (B8, D8, G5) – Fighting through major starting pitching injuries and offensive malaise so far. (Gus)
9. Minnesota Twins (B9, D10, G11) – Royce Lewis is back and he has 10 HR in 74 ABs. And Carlos Correa has a 145 OPS+.
T10. Kansas City Royals (B14, D11, G9) – As it turns out, Seth Lugo can be a quality starter. He proved last year in San Diego he can hold down a rotation spot, and has flourished as the de facto ace of the Royals rotation. (Dalton)
T10. Boston Red Sox (B10, D9, G15) – Jaren Duran has been nothing short of a jolt of energy to this team. After a few frustrating years, Duran’s boost to the Red Sox has been a lift to the Fenway faithful. (Dalton)
12. Houston Astros (B13, D12, G10) – The second-hottest team over the past two weeks, the Astros are thriving despite some pitching injuries.
13. San Diego Padres (B11, D13, G12) – Could climb higher based on overall talent, but need to show a pulse first. (Gus)
14. New York Mets (B12, D15, G13) – This white-hot Mets team will have to adjust their pitching plans following the 10-game, sticky-stuff suspension for Edwin Diaz. The real contending teams find a way to fight through adversity, so now we’re about to find out what this team is made of. (Dalton)
15. St. Louis Cardinals (B16, D14, G16) – They’re below average in both runs scored and runs allowed yet somehow, they’re 41-38, which is five full games above their Pythagorean Record.
16. Tampa Bay Rays (B15, D16, G20) – Saying they need offense is like saying ice is cold: it always is. The loss of Wander Franco hurts them. (Gus)
17. Arizona Diamondbacks (B18, D17, G17) – Still starting pitching and offensively short. Should sell everything and reload. (Gus)
18. Texas Rangers (B21, D18, G14) – Pitching staff starting to become healthier and offense still has much firepower. (Gus)
19. Pittsburgh Pirates (B17, D20, G23) – Paul Skenes has been every bit as good as advertised, giving the Bucs three good starters. Offense needs to be more productive.
20. San Francisco Giants (B20, D22, G21) – They have three starting pitchers and two starting outfielders on the IL and Wilmer Flores & Nick Ahmed struggling to stay above The Galvis Line.
21. Cincinnati Reds (B23, D19, G22) – There are two teams that are chasing a Wild Card position right now that have a positive run differential – the Mets and the Reds. Cincinnati is competing thanks to the human-highlight reel of Elly De La Cruz, and his mammoth home runs. (Dalton)
22. Washington Nationals (B19, D21, G25) – Since gathering CY Award votes in 2019, Patrick Corbin has gone 28-64 with a 5.60 ERA in 121 starts. At least this is the last year of his 6/$140 contract.
23. Chicago Cubs (B24, D25, G19) – The luster has started to rub off from this Cubs team as the league has started to figure out Shota Imanaga. Don’t let his 2.96 season ERA fool you, it has been a month-long struggle for the rookie. (Dalton)
24. Detroit Tigers (B25, D26, G18) – Just a little offense would be great; need to be busy in July or a season will be lost. (Gus)
25. Los Angeles Angels (B22, D24, G26) – They’ve gone 12-8 in their last 20 games and they’ve played .500 ball in their last 36 games.
26. Toronto Blue Jays (B26, D23, G24) – The whispers have begun about this team finally dismantling their core. It seems like the Blue Jays have decided that their master plan that involved assembling a team full of the sons of All Stars was for naught. (Dalton)
27. Oakland A’s (B27, D27, G28) – The best thing to say about this A’s team is that despite their low standing, they are a better team than most expected them to be at this point. The most interesting storyline will be whether or not they decide to hold onto Mason Miller, the 25-year-old closer who is lighting the world on fire. (Dalton)
28. Colorado Rockies (B28, D28, G29) – The Rockies have gone from a .460 winning percentage in 2021 to a .420 mark then a .364 winning percentage in 2023. And his year stands at .338 after 80 games.
29. Florida Marlins (B29, D29, G27) – Jazz Chisholm with a 111 mark is the only starter with a triple-digit OPS+. And five pitchers who’ve started a game for them this year are currently on the IL, keeping Sandy Alcantara, who’s missed the entire season, company.
30. Chicago White Sox (B30, D30, G30) – The White Sox have one of the top farm systems in baseball. That’s a good thing with how much of a disaster this season has been. (Dalton)
This was very entertaining and I will look forward to seeing it from the three of you. Can you explain to me what the criteria is for the power rankings?
There is none – it’s chaos!
For me, I try to use a combination of overall record and how the team is doing recently.
