After being stymied offensively over most of the past four games, the Mets broke out in a big way, as they pounded out 17 hits and nearly as many runs, as they cruised to a 15-2 win over the Twins Monday night at Citi Field. The Mets are now 5-2 in the last seven games against teams over .500, which was thought to be a stretch to determine how good the club really is.
Pete Alonso got the scoring going with a solo homer in the fourth inning. The Mets put up a six-spot, with three RBI singles and two sac flies.
Two innings later, the Mets again put up a crooked number, this time a five-run inning without the benefit of an extra-base hit. The inning featured three hits, four walks and a HBP.
And if that wasn’t enough, the Mets posted their third inning with a crooked number in the seventh. The Mets scored four times, aided by three doubles.
Jose Quintana started and was down, 1-0, after two batters. But that’s all he let up over six innings, as he confounded the Twins with an assortment of slow curves. He evened his record at 6-6 and lowered his ERA to 3.89 for the year.
Jose Butto pitched the final three innings and picked up his second save.
Every Mets to get in the lineup got a hit. Luis Torrens led the way with three hits, including a double and three RBIs. Four others had two hits, including Tyrone Taylor, who didn’t start the game but came on as a defensive replacement. In addition to the hits, Taylor made a HR-robbing catch n the 7th inning.
Jeff McNeil also had two hits, including a double, and hit the ball hard two other times with nothing to show. He upped his OPS to .656, an 84-point increase from where it was on July 3.
Gut Reaction: the Mets were like the Beatles, hits kept coming. Love, Love Me Do.
Jeff McNeil is the most unluckiest guy in the league.
Quintana registered his 8th quality start in 21 starts. In 17 starts he didn’t gave more than 3 runs. He hasn’t the stamina pitch 6 innings or Mendoza doesn’t let him.
Jose Butto’s three inning save might be to stretch him out for the rotation spot.
It is deadline day and boy it would be good to get one or two relievers.
Let’s win the series today.
Good to see some runs. Better to see a win. Mets are in a wild wild card race with some major road trips facing them. It would be nice if the bats can show a tad more consistency, but that isn’t a complaint.
