Luis Severino couldn’t keep the good times going and the Mets fell to the Twins, 8-3, Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field. With the loss, the Mets dropped to 57-51 for the year.
Severino gave up a solo homer in the second for the game’s first run. After the Mets gave him the lead in the bottom of the inning, Severino gave it right back, with interest. He allowed five runs in the third inning, including another homer. And the Mets were never in it after that.
In 10 games this year against teams .500 or better, Severino has allowed 33 ER in 52.1 IP for a 5.68 ERA. The Mets missed the boat not trading him at the deadline with the prices teams were getting for starting pitching. Sure, their options to replace him were not good. But were they 5.68-ERA bad?
Mark Vientos gave the Mets the lead with a two-run homer, his 16th home run of the year. Jeff McNeil stayed hot with two of the team’s six hits.
Tylor Megill made his 2024 bullpen debut, replacing Severino and giving up 3 H and 1 ER in 2 IP. He’s just as bad as a reliever as he is a starter. Huascar Brazoban made his Mets debut, with a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
After a day off on Thursday, the Mets embark on a 10-game road trip, starting with three in Anaheim against the Angels.
Happy to see Brazoban with a good debut. Young and Ottavino also threw scoreless frames. Series win and a day off! Vientos continues to pay dividends. Looking for another series win against the Halos starting with the first appearance of Paul Blackburn. We’re going find out quickly if the new guys can play. Can’t wait!
