The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead but that’s not enough at Coors Field and the end result was a 6-3 loss to the Rockies. The Mets are now 2-3 halfway through the 10-game road trip.
Luis Severino, making his first start in Coors, didn’t pitch bad but was let down by his defense and a cheap homer. His final line was 5 IP, 5 R, 4 ER with 0 BB and 5 Ks. The home run he allowed looked like a routine fly ball off the bat but it just kept carrying and went over the wall for a two-run blast.
Meanwhile, the Mets were let down by the middle of their order, which went 1-10.
Brandon Nimmo and Jose Iglesias both had two hits apiece, with Nimmo contributing a double. Tyrone Taylor also had a double but those were the only two XBH on the night for the Mets among their nine hits.
The Mets had their chances and also hit some balls hard that the Rockies were able to turn into outs. When the other team out-homers you and out-fields you – typically you lose.
Paul Blackburn makes his second start as a Met Wednesday night, as the Mets look to draw even in the four-game series.
It wasn’t the Mets’ night.
Lindor on first, two outs. Nimmo hits a rocket into left center that the left fielder cut off before it got to the track. Great hustle and it kept Lindor from scoring. Next man up Martinez, hit a ball on the nose but it’s a one hopper to the second baseman playing almost up the middle. No runs.
The homerun they hit was after a double off the right field wall that Taylor momentarily bobbled. So, the runner was waved home. He should have been a dead duck but Inglesias can’t get a good grip on the ball and throws a six bouncer to home plate that the runner beat by a step. That would have been the third out.
Pinch hitting for Torens with first and third and one out in the sixth inning with Winker, down two runs. First pitch, double play. What was that? Sixth inning?
Or, how about the three 3-1 swings in the ninth that were all converted into outs.
It just wasn’t their night. Go get some sleep guys, see you tomorrow.
Disappointing offense again. We know this team needs the offense to win given the five or six innings we get from our starters. It’s really now or never to start scoring runs. Time to put on their big boy pants and make a run. Today is another day. LGM
