The Mets jumped on top early and added on throughout the game before finishing with a 9-1 win over the A’s Wednesday night at Citi Field. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Mets.
The big star of the night was Pete Alonso, who had a four-hit game, including a double and a home run. Alonso drove in three runs in the night. Francisco Lindor also homered, his 100th career homer as a Met. The team clubbed 11 hits, with five of them going for extra-bases.
David Peterson started for the Mets and pitched into the seventh inning. He allowed a one-out single and was removed from the game, even though it looked like he had gas left in the tank. Peterson finished with 6.1 IP and 1 UER. He allowed just three hits but walks again were a problem, as he served up four free passes. Still, he raised his record to 7-1.
Three relievers combined for 2.2 scoreless innings to finish things up.
The Mets go for the series win with a 1:10 p.m. game Thursday.
Nice win and a big day for Alonso. Its about time. Nice start by Peterson and a good job by the pen. Need to build on this win and keep moving forward. A wild card spot is still right in front of us. Now we will see how much they want it.
I was wrong about David Peterson. For years I thought he wasn’t capable of being a good pitcher. Then, last year he started the season in June and incorporating some tips offered by José Quintana, had a credible year. This year, he is even better, but started around the same time. I understand the walks are higher than we would like, but so are Robbie Ray’s. So are other pitchers…. If you manage the hits, the walks are tolerable.
Peterson’s ERA stands at 3.04…. 3.04…. 3.04! Wow! I can’t believe it! I just want to keep saying it. His ERA at home is 3.13 and better on the road at 2.97. And while his WHIP of 1.39 isn’t adorable, he manages just fine. His ERA starts going up in the fourth inning and by the fifth and sixth it’s over 5, but that 3.04 cannot be taken away from him. Mendoza has to start giving the young man more rope, but in today’s MLB, if you get into the seventh inning, you did a very good job.
Gut Reaction: the Mets needed a quality start and Peterson came through. The Mets were in a four game losing streak so Mendoza pulled Peterson in the 7th inning and 88 pitches because the tying run was at the plate. Peterson ERA now is 3.04 but he pitched only 71.1 innings. In comparison, Butto has an ERA 2.52 in 60.2 innings.
Let’s take the series this afternoon.
