After being no-hit for eight innings, the Mets broke out in a big way, scoring six runs in the ninth thanks to two home runs and they emerged with a 6-2 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto Wednesday afternoon. The victory gave the Mets the series win and sends them to a key series in Philadelphia on an up note.
Francisco Lindor led off the ninth inning and fell behind 0-2. But then he hit an upper deck homer to tie the game and give the Mets life. The Mets then loaded the bases and got the lead with sacrifice flies from Pete Alonso and Starling Marte. Then Francisco Alvarez capped the inning with a 439-foot, 3-run homer to center field.
Sean Manaea started for the Mets and allowed just three hits in 6.2 IP. But he left on the losing end and seemed destined for a tough-luck loss. But he ended up with a no-decision. With the six-run ninth, it seemed like Edwin Diaz would get the day off. But Ryne Stanek allowed one run and put two other runners on base, turning things into a save situation.
Diaz came on and got a one-pitch save, retiring the final batter on a fly to left field.
The Mets have won 11 of their last 13 games. After an off day on Thursday, the Mets start the tough part of their schedule, traveling to Philadelphia for a three-game series with the leaders in the NL East.
Gut Reaction: Magical ! Led by Master Magician Francisco Lindor. His magic wand can break up and no hitter and pull of victory out of a hat. His assistant, Sean Manaea, set up the stage by pitching one run ball. Then Alvarez set off a bomb and when the smoke cleared the fans stood up and cheered for an amazing performance.
Huge win. Lindor putting up legendary season in franchise lore.
Last game not being able to watch the game live. Fingers were crossed going to the top of the ninth being no-hit and knowing how bad it would have been to lose the series. Magical Lindor to the immediate rescue then some small ball, then someone finally woke up Alvarez. Hope that is a precursor for a strong offensive surge from the catching position. We owe it to the Phillies to knock them around. Does 12-4 get us to the playoffs?
14-2 may get you the division, if things go right and you take at least 6 games from the Phillies. Winning all seven would really be amazing! Don’t think it can’t happen…. Mets would still need some help.
The schedule is against us. The Brewers might be playing non-starters the last three to help us out.
The Phillies and Braves will play us as tough as possible. 88 wins. 8-8 against the top teams in the NL is a stretch.
But the Mets have been the top team in all of baseball since early June. Why couldn’t they at least go .500 against other top teams?

mostly because they have struggled pretty mightily against the Braves and brewers, and the good Phillies. But that doesnt mean they cant do well.
They are 5-5 against the Braves this year, unless you are talking about struggling “historically”. The Braves are not the same this year. I know they are still a quality team with great starting pitching, but I think we have the advantage on offense and they will now be without Lopez in that series. I also think we match up well with the Phillies and we get 4 of those at home. You aren’t the best team in baseball by record over 3 months by chance. Those teams should be worried about having to face the Mets. Then bring on the Brewers for our season opening revenge.
Look at the Mets writeup in the power rankings. They are 41-39 against teams over .500.
One day at a time and one series at a time. If they don’t lose another series then they will have a minimum of 90 wins. Winning the Braves series is crucial because of the ramifications of a tie with them. The first order of business is winning this weekend series against the Phillies. They have the momentum because of the win yesterday in Toronto.
