Pete Alonso homered and drove in five runs to lift the Mets to a 10-1 win over the Nationals Tuesday night at Citi Field. Combined with a loss by the Braves, the Mets hold a two-game lead over Atlanta for the third Wild Card spot.
Alonso’s first hit in his three-hit game was a bloop single to right with the bases loaded, which drove in two runs and gave the Mets a 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Alonso doubled and came home to score on a double by Tyrone Taylor to give the Mets a 6-1 advantage. And his third hit of the night was a three-run homer to left in the sixth that made it 9-1.
The other big hitting star of the night was Luisangel Acuna, while making his home debut. Acuna hit an RBI double in the third inning that tied the score. He also had a bouncer up the middle for a hit in the sixth and a home run to left center that traveled 414 feet for the game’s final run.
Francisco Alvarez also homered as the Mets pounded out 14 hits on the night.
Tylor Megill started and continued this impressive run by Mets’ SP. He allowed just one unearned run in six innings and lowered his ERA to 4.05 for the year.
The Mets finished up with their “B” relievers, with Adam Ottavino, Huascar Brazoban and Alex Young each pitching a scoreless frame. In his last 17 games, Ottavino has allowed 4 ER in 15 IP, a 2.40 ERA.
The victory pushed the Mets’ record this year against the Nats to 10-2. They’ll go for the sweep Wednesday night, their last game of the season against a team with a losing record.
Mets pummeled the opposition again
ATL blew a 5-1 lead against CIN
COL currently leading ARI 5-1 in the 7th inning
If COL wins, the Mets will be tied with ARI for the 2nd WC spot, with ATL 2 back
BTW – if NYM and ARI end up with the same W/L record, the Mets will advance as they have won the season series against ARI
And the padres are losing as well. Could be 2.5 back of the top spot with the tue breaker. Please God give the mets a home playoff series in 2 weeks.
I have to reinforce my original premise is it the Mets are doing this for me and for God ! I was not kidding when I said that the Messiah would come when the Mets were in the World Series in the sixth game Nothing like being under siege alter once perceptions about what’s truly meaningful
Very good day for the Mets on all fronts. Megill on the hill was not as concerning as it’s been in the past. Stacking up wins is a good thing. The remaining 11 will not be easy. I hope they saved some runs for tonight. To say JD Martinez is due would be an under-statement.
Acuna Matata what a wonderful phrase
Acuna Matata ain’t no passing craze
It means no worries for the rest of your days
It’s a problem, free, philosophy, Acuna Matata
What if Acuna is this year’s 2015 Michael Conforto? Yes it was a garbage time late home run but one nonetheless and three hits from the nine hole was awesome, not to mention his strong glove and throws. When you hit three long balls you can overcome nadda from Vientos, Martinez bad Bader. Need Pete to close the year strong and Lindor back ASAP. Need the right Q on the mound today for the sweep as the games get tougher the rest of the way. Kudos to the assist yesterday from the Reds, Astros and Rockies as we are tied for the #2 WC spot and hold the tie breaker. Thrilled to be two up on the scum sucking Braves. I think 7-4 the rest of the way gets us to the post season. It’s one day and one game at a time.
Acuna Matata – very clever!
Gut Reaction: Megill had another very good game. The starting pitching is very good and unexpected. Stearns has very difficult decisions in the offseason to determine if it is Fool’s Gold for the real thing. Right now, they are in playoff race and so far they are winning. It was a good game for the rookie Acuna. Even though it was a mop up, the bullpen didn’t allow any runs. Taylor is hot so please don’t sit him down. This was a series win. Let’s be greedy and go for the sweep and kept the pressure on the Braves and the Diamondbacks (and dare should I say the Padres).
