The Red Sox came in to this brief two-game series with one of the best offenses in the game. So, the Mets hold them to a total of three runs and somehow end up getting swept. Wednesday night the Mets lost, 1-0, and stop me if you’ve heard this before but they wasted another big performance by Jacob deGrom.
The Mets got the first two batters of the game on base via walks and then the offense pretty much packed it in from there. At this point there’s nothing much else to say. The Mets managed just two hits all game and easily could have been no-hit. Jeff McNeil hit a shallow fly to center field that fell in front of Kike Hernandez, who’s not really a center fielder. A more experienced guy probably makes the play. And Pete Alonso hit a weak grounder into a hole in the shift.
Meanwhile, deGrom wasn’t as dominating as his last time out and he still finished with a line of 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB and 9 Ks. We should all struggle so much. And the bullpen did its job again.
This loss is squarely on the offense. Burn the bats, bench Michael Conforto and Dominic Smith, drop Francisco Lindor in the order and get Luis Guillorme in there. And if anyone knows a priest to do an exorcism, might as well try that, too.
Can’t lose tomorrow, so that’s something. Maybe the Mets are saving all of their runs for the Phillies.
57 total runs in 19 games……3.0 avg. Is this deja vue, and I’m watching the 1965 Mets? Actually; no. I’m not going to insult the 65 crew. They didn’t strike out in double digits on a nightly basis. And yes I know the game’s played differently now, but this version of most outs coming via Ks is more boring then all the 1-0 games of 1968.
It’s pretty bad when the Mets can manage to make a deGrom start unwatchable. I told my wife during the 5th inning that the Mets lost. Three runs for Boston…and a sweep for them. Yuck.

Its shocking.
Yuck. The word stuck in my mind from last night’s performance and frankly the 2021 start.
It is not time to bail out or go into hysteria, but I agree 100% that at this stage even a deGrom start is unwatchable, and that is downright alarming and hard to do.
Again, despite the additions and money vault, this is not a good team until the players collectively prove otherwise. It’s not rocket science.
deGrom tied Nolan Ryan’s record for most strikeouts in the first five starts of a season. deGrom has been more than dominant. I wonder what the record is for the best ERA by a starter in the ninth of April with at least 4 starts.
Steve Cohen must be fuming.

Despite all the roster churn of the past few seasons, we still refuse to score when JDG is on the mound and we still go through these awful collective slumps. On paper, this is a formidable lineup – possibly our best ever. Makes no sense.
Not even close to our best ever. Not by a mile. The 2006 team had Beltran, Delgado, a young Wright and Reyes, besides others.
These players are mostly fastball hitting swingers that can’t touch a breaking ball. There’s your problem. They’ve been figured out and there isn’t any competition provided to make them care. I really hope Steve Cohen doesn’t regret the Lindor extension. Where is the extra batting practice against curveballs? Ha! The union would have a cow if players worked more than they had to or on a scheduled off day like today, even though they’ve had so many non-work days all month.
Smith, McNeil and Guillorme need to go into a cycle of usage until we see otherwise. Make them work. Make them care for their real job more than their commercials. I’m sure there’s a date the team brass is willing to wait, but the players shouldn’t be willing to wait a second.
Is one problem Chili Davis?
Yeah, I would stick Almora, Pillar, Guillorme, Nido and Villar in there more often. Let’s see what they’ve got!
Smith looks out of kilter, both in the field and at bat.
Gut Reaction: Too many strikeouts from the offense. Put the ball in play.
The offense is in a drastic slump and the manager needs to employ measured and aggressive moves. He has a solid bench and he needs to it to change the mix. Lindor and Smith needs some rest. Guillorme and Villar have been contributing and McNeill can play a corner outfield. Almora or Pillar are an option. Nido has contribute also. Rojas has options to right the ship. How he does it will show his skill as a manager.
Of course we could try for just one game to stop hitting into the shift. Ja-heez…I was getting angry watching Conforto hit……
There is no easy fix for this team. I don’t expect Rojas can turn them around. The Mets lack a center. DeGrom is their best player but he is loathe to criticize his teammates, so he abdicates that potential to rally his troops. Lindor is busy chatting up the opposition.
Compare to the Red Sox. They have Martinez as a major presence with Bogartz providing hard-nosed muscle, but their secret weapon is their catcher Vasquez… tough, determined, refusing to lose… no one shaking off his pitch calls. They are not a particularly deep team, but they blew into town and took care of business. Well coached.
The Mets have a deep bunch of really nice guys who like to have fun. Who will lead this team? You better believe that Steve Cohen is second guessing… Lindor is an expensive defensive specialist. Conforto, Smith, McNeil, are Lindor all swiss cheese from the left side. Alonso and JD are too easy for savvy pitchers… and now Nimmo seems confused.
This team is hard to watch. B-o-h-o-h-o-r-i-n-g.
