The Mets look to go eight games above .500 at the All-Star break as they host the Cubs at 1:10 today. Jonathon Niese (7-3) takes on Ryan Dempster (3-3).
July 7, 2012 – 6:50 pm
lets hope sandy has something interesting to say!
July 8, 2012 – 12:18 pm
START 7/8/12 CHATTER
July 8, 2012 – 12:58 pm
Dempster has been really good this year, but hopefully he will be rusty today
July 8, 2012 – 1:02 pm
He’s 1-5 lifetime against the Mets with a 5.30 ERA
July 8, 2012 – 1:02 pm
10-5
July 8, 2012 – 1:03 pm
Ralph Kiner to make an appearance in the booth today.
July 8, 2012 – 1:10 pm
do you know what his starting record is vs the mets?
July 8, 2012 – 1:17 pm
not good niese
July 8, 2012 – 1:17 pm
probably should have threw a ball earlier
July 8, 2012 – 1:19 pm
stop the bleeding niese!
July 8, 2012 – 1:20 pm
Met SP has been hit hard this last turn, hope the break will help them rest
July 8, 2012 – 1:22 pm
Come on Mets, lets chip away, Marmol is waiting for us in the 9th
July 8, 2012 – 1:33 pm
Wow – I miss an inning and we’re down 4?
July 8, 2012 – 1:35 pm
Niese wasn’t good at all in the 1st inning
July 8, 2012 – 1:36 pm
He was throwing all strikes, but hittable pitches
July 8, 2012 – 1:37 pm
hey gents. whats the score?
July 8, 2012 – 1:38 pm
good grief. pitching woes i gather
July 8, 2012 – 1:39 pm
niese gave up 4 in the 1st
July 8, 2012 – 1:40 pm
wow HRs?
July 8, 2012 – 1:42 pm
wife and kids gone – hopefully I can watch the game in peace!
July 8, 2012 – 1:42 pm
That looked high
July 8, 2012 – 1:42 pm
appears to be anoyher bad day against NLC
July 8, 2012 – 1:43 pm
In hindsight, it might be that Gee’s game yesterday was huge for the Mets
July 8, 2012 – 1:44 pm
Where was a Dee Gordon error when we needed it?
July 8, 2012 – 1:44 pm
3 straight lousy outings from the top of the rotation against lousy teams.
July 8, 2012 – 1:47 pm
Perhaps the AS break is coming at a good time.
July 8, 2012 – 1:48 pm
Is there a better SS than Tejada in the NL? Tulo?
July 8, 2012 – 1:48 pm
Id say that, but the struggles against the Disastros, Cubs, Rox is truely shocking to thee eyes.
July 8, 2012 – 1:49 pm
I like what I’ve seen from Zach Cozart.
July 8, 2012 – 1:50 pm
actually, having published quite a bit, I do know that the subject verb agreement above was appalling. struggles were.
July 8, 2012 – 1:50 pm
Ok. But seriously, I think RT is the best Ss in the NL.
July 8, 2012 – 1:51 pm
I love me some Ruben but I can’t agree with that.
July 8, 2012 – 1:51 pm
Ian Desmond has 16 HR and an .820 OPS
July 8, 2012 – 1:51 pm
Desmond’s an all star for whats that worth
July 8, 2012 – 1:51 pm
**** you beat me to it
July 8, 2012 – 1:52 pm
Hes better than Castro
July 8, 2012 – 1:52 pm
Is he still a terrible defender though, i think last year he made a LOT of errers
July 8, 2012 – 1:53 pm
also furcal is pretty good this year
July 8, 2012 – 1:53 pm
Great story about his defense this year in terms on defensive runs saved or given away. Hes well above league average.
July 8, 2012 – 1:54 pm
chris, you talking about tejada?
July 8, 2012 – 1:55 pm
Yes…by Adam Rubin today on ESPN Mets Blog
July 8, 2012 – 1:55 pm
Desmond’s fielding percentage is about the same as last year but UZR likes what it’s seen from him so far…
July 8, 2012 – 1:55 pm
The other means of evaluation is through video review. Baseball Info Solutions categorizes plays into 30 types of Good Fielding Plays and 50 types of Defensive Misplays & Errors. Tejada entered the day with 17 Good Fielding Plays and eight Defensive Misplays & Errors. Quintanilla, Cedeno, Valdespin and Justin Turner combined for nine Good Fielding Plays and 16 Defensive Misplays & Errors. And, oh by the way, Jose Reyes has 26 Good Fielding Plays and 34 Defensive Misplays & Errors. Tejada’s 17-8 Good/Misplay ratio is well above the MLB average, which is about 1.25 good-per-misplay.
July 8, 2012 – 1:56 pm
C’mon Ike!
July 8, 2012 – 1:57 pm
he’s had a knack for 3-r HR this year
July 8, 2012 – 1:57 pm
Im ready for one!
July 8, 2012 – 1:59 pm
Back to SS, Lowrie has also been good this year, 14HRs
July 8, 2012 – 2:02 pm
Nice catch by JV
July 8, 2012 – 2:03 pm
Niese settling in. I don’t feel this lead is insurmountable.
July 8, 2012 – 2:03 pm
Its not. We got this.
July 8, 2012 – 2:05 pm
RT may not be the best…but he’s inching his way up there and doing it with little recognition. At 22, he’s got real upside of he can add more muscle mass. I like a lot of what he brings.
July 8, 2012 – 2:06 pm
Agreed.
July 8, 2012 – 2:06 pm
You guys getting more that just the trade rumor action with Colorado?
July 8, 2012 – 2:07 pm
I have to say that neither of those guys really excite me.
July 8, 2012 – 2:09 pm
I don’t really like Hernandez, but I’d welcome that Reynolds guy. If they want Turner, that’s fine with me
July 8, 2012 – 2:09 pm
and to lose JT?
July 8, 2012 – 2:10 pm
We do have Pascucci still at AAA i think. he could be the backup 1B
July 8, 2012 – 2:10 pm
Turner is very replaceable.
July 8, 2012 – 2:10 pm
I like red. but every day I keep wondering who on the Mets will be leaving.
July 8, 2012 – 2:10 pm
I’ll be forever grateful to Turner for his performance last May but I’m not going to expect that performance from him ever again.
July 8, 2012 – 2:11 pm
Sure.
July 8, 2012 – 2:11 pm
If that’s the only thing that COL can remember about Turner, id say trade him quick while he value is high
July 8, 2012 – 2:12 pm
Turner is an acceptable MI backup. I don’t want to denigrate him.
July 8, 2012 – 2:13 pm
I don’t care if we deal him or Cedeno or Quintanilla.
July 8, 2012 – 2:13 pm
Id lose Cedeno, Q, then red in that order.
July 8, 2012 – 2:14 pm
I guess Nickeas out then.
July 8, 2012 – 2:15 pm
I’d rather have Nickeas than Hernandez to be honest
July 8, 2012 – 2:15 pm
Nickeas has got a little Jeff Francoeur in him. Everyone talks about what a great guy he is that they tend to gloss over that their presence in the lineup is counterproductive.
July 8, 2012 – 2:16 pm
I’d say the comparison is fair, but Nickeas is a catcher while Francoeur was an OF
July 8, 2012 – 2:16 pm
So Nickeas has more defensive value.
July 8, 2012 – 2:17 pm
Id be happier with Rob Johnson than Nickeas. I guess platoon Thole and Hernandez. Not so sure thats a great idea.
July 8, 2012 – 2:17 pm
There’s a reason he’s still here. Because they could have made the move to Johnson at any time
July 8, 2012 – 2:18 pm
this ought to be interesting…
July 8, 2012 – 2:19 pm
yes
July 8, 2012 – 2:19 pm
I was just finishing up work outside – did a trade go down?
July 8, 2012 – 2:19 pm
Not yet.
July 8, 2012 – 2:20 pm
But Sandy Alderson just joined the SNY booth.
July 8, 2012 – 2:20 pm
I’m so glad Ike was never demoted
July 8, 2012 – 2:20 pm
I wonder what it will take to get Dempster…
July 8, 2012 – 2:20 pm
Hey dj – thanks for joining us
July 8, 2012 – 2:20 pm
July 8, 2012 – 2:21 pm
They stuck with Ike and survived his brutal first nine weeks.
July 8, 2012 – 2:22 pm
just in time with Kirk and Duda falling off the planet
July 8, 2012 – 2:22 pm
I still think they should have sent him down in early May, he probably would have found it sooner
July 8, 2012 – 2:22 pm
Love it – wasn’t going to learn anything down there he couldn’t learn here, and also this was supposed to be the year we tried to figure out the hand we were dealt, anything else was gravy
July 8, 2012 – 2:22 pm
Quick innings when the Mets are up are bad enough but when they come when Alderson is talking – that’s even worse.
July 8, 2012 – 2:23 pm
seriously.we needed tejada to have a 20 pitch AB
July 8, 2012 – 2:23 pm
Not sure if it was a matter of him learning anything in Triple-A. It was more of getting his limp bat out of the order.
July 8, 2012 – 2:24 pm
@ Name, maybe, I’ll tell you one thing, really would’ve liked to have gotten Mex’s full thoughts on IKE – remember, the Cards dealt longtime star Torre to make room for Keith in ’75, who promptly washed out and was sent to the minors to regroup.
July 8, 2012 – 2:25 pm
@dj: It’s not like he was going to be sent down to learn, but rather to rediscover what he had lost in a less intense environment
July 8, 2012 – 2:26 pm
very nice point, dj
July 8, 2012 – 2:26 pm
Yeah, I would like to know how much that Happy Valley affected him early in the season.
July 8, 2012 – 2:27 pm
Or if that was even the correct diagnosis.
July 8, 2012 – 2:27 pm
Yup.
July 8, 2012 – 2:28 pm
But Keith the question is what is the form that Bay comes back to?
July 8, 2012 – 2:28 pm
If it’s 2009 sign me up. But I think that player no longer exists.
July 8, 2012 – 2:28 pm
well, interesting about C. Im inclined to keep rolling with Thole right now.
July 8, 2012 – 2:28 pm
As someone who opens up a picnic basket of optimism every morning, I think Bay’s a lost cause.
July 8, 2012 – 2:29 pm
Picnic basket of optimism – that should be your chat handle!
July 8, 2012 – 2:29 pm
im with you dj…but im probably less optimistic on a daily basis!
July 8, 2012 – 2:30 pm
Sadly Bay is a lost cause. And if we lose Scotty’s time for Bay, that will not win us games.
July 8, 2012 – 2:30 pm
ok. Time to beat up the relief.
July 8, 2012 – 2:31 pm
Well, like Bruce Willis says in “Last Boy Scout,” Satan Claus is out there and growing stronger every day. Have to fight ‘im with a badass/cheery disposition.
July 8, 2012 – 2:31 pm
Way to go Murph
July 8, 2012 – 2:31 pm
here we go
July 8, 2012 – 2:31 pm
Wife telling me the grass won’t cut itself – Bri, thanks for invite….try to come back later
July 8, 2012 – 2:32 pm
I K E ! LGM!!
July 8, 2012 – 2:32 pm
Thanks dj – we’re doing this for all of the games now.
July 8, 2012 – 2:32 pm
see ya dj
July 8, 2012 – 2:33 pm
They must be showcaasing Dempster for a trade because you don’t bring someone back for just 60 pitches
July 8, 2012 – 2:33 pm
Sandy not ruling out a promotion for Harvey.
July 8, 2012 – 2:33 pm
you read his interview today?
July 8, 2012 – 2:34 pm
C’mon Gary – Castro is 20 steps in the outfield! You can’t call infield fly on that!
July 8, 2012 – 2:34 pm
interview where?
July 8, 2012 – 2:34 pm
post
July 8, 2012 – 2:34 pm
July 8, 2012 – 2:34 pm
Thanks – I’ll check it out
July 8, 2012 – 2:35 pm
c r a p
July 8, 2012 – 2:36 pm
Duda ripped that one. Oh well…
July 8, 2012 – 2:37 pm
greetings all!
July 8, 2012 – 2:37 pm
Hey 679 – welcome and grab you a real name!
July 8, 2012 – 2:38 pm
Mets got into an early 4-0 hole. They’ve had a ton of opportunities but haven’t been able to cash in.
July 8, 2012 – 2:39 pm
JV covering some ground!
July 8, 2012 – 2:39 pm
my secret fake original name
July 8, 2012 – 2:39 pm
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Niese complete this game. Didn’t think id say that 6 innings ago!
July 8, 2012 – 2:39 pm
He’s been cruising ever since I got here. Name, you let us down in the first!
July 8, 2012 – 2:39 pm
speaking of Ryan Dempster auditioning for a new team?
July 8, 2012 – 2:40 pm
I can’t imagine the Cubs saying he’s untouchable.
July 8, 2012 – 2:40 pm
Hey Steve – whaddya think about that 1B for the Cubs?
July 8, 2012 – 2:40 pm
Actually, his spot is coming up 4th next inning so he’s probably done after this innning. Forgot this was the good ol NL
July 8, 2012 – 2:40 pm
lol..lahair, he’s GOLD!!!!
July 8, 2012 – 2:40 pm
They yanked him last inning. Maholm replaced him.
July 8, 2012 – 2:40 pm
or wasn’t that who you meant?
July 8, 2012 – 2:41 pm
Rizzo
July 8, 2012 – 2:41 pm
Name – did you mean Niese?
July 8, 2012 – 2:41 pm
was just joking…he belongs now, he didn’t with the Pads…he looks awfully good, but we’ll see who adjusts betterm him or the league
July 8, 2012 – 2:42 pm
If Cashner can ever stay healthy, this will be a deal we talk about forever
July 8, 2012 – 2:42 pm
yea i was talking about Niese
July 8, 2012 – 2:42 pm
aha – sorry
July 8, 2012 – 2:43 pm
I’m a numbers guy, but Brian, gotta tell you when Rizzo fielded a tough grounder about a week ago and tossed out a runner at home, his face read “I can do this” – and before, his face always read “my G_d can I do this?”
July 8, 2012 – 2:43 pm
I’m sick of Reed Johnson.
July 8, 2012 – 2:43 pm
Game over
July 8, 2012 – 2:43 pm
ugh
July 8, 2012 – 2:43 pm
Not even Marmol can save us now
July 8, 2012 – 2:44 pm
Astounding we can play so utterly poorly against terrible teams
July 8, 2012 – 2:44 pm
Castro has looked good, too.
July 8, 2012 – 2:45 pm
we’re 7 games over .500…last game before all-star break, it’s not the end of the world
July 8, 2012 – 2:45 pm
I think the Cubs are 8-4 in their last 12 games, so they’ve been playing well
July 8, 2012 – 2:45 pm
With Rizzo of course
July 8, 2012 – 2:45 pm
How many of those are against the Mets?
July 8, 2012 – 2:45 pm
true, but losing 4 of 6 against about the worst team in baseball stings. These are games we need to win.
July 8, 2012 – 2:46 pm
Yea, i’m just saying a team’s record isn’t really a great measure of how they are playing at present moment.
July 8, 2012 – 2:47 pm
Hey Brian.. I’m up in Vermont, Mets need to pull a Costanza befor the break
July 8, 2012 – 2:47 pm
what’s the team priority approaching the deadline Brian?
July 8, 2012 – 2:48 pm
Gooden’s gotta be one, right?
July 8, 2012 – 2:48 pm
After today, we will be 9-14 against NL central. I cant seem to get my brain around that.
July 8, 2012 – 2:48 pm
lol
July 8, 2012 – 2:49 pm
Either a righty bat or a reliever
July 8, 2012 – 2:49 pm
Isn’t that the “shrinkage” episode?
July 8, 2012 – 2:50 pm
Make that 17 HR for Desmond!
July 8, 2012 – 2:50 pm
Most of that is because we are 2-7 vs Cubbies and Astros, 7-7 vs the rest of the division
July 8, 2012 – 2:50 pm
And Harper finally got to go to the ASG, completely undeserving IMO.
July 8, 2012 – 2:50 pm
why Chirs?
July 8, 2012 – 2:50 pm
*Chris?
July 8, 2012 – 2:51 pm
Exactly name…2-7 v cubs and astros? its unrreal
July 8, 2012 – 2:52 pm
I dropped Desmond in a fantasy league tio keep Aviles…sigh
July 8, 2012 – 2:52 pm
How exactly is that record possible? Aren’t the good teams supposed to be beat up on the bad ones?
July 8, 2012 – 2:52 pm
Well. You could look at it as the mets played poorly against them. Or you could look at it as the Mets played them when they were hot
July 8, 2012 – 2:52 pm
I’m just viewing it as they played them while they were hot
July 8, 2012 – 2:52 pm
ugh
July 8, 2012 – 2:52 pm
He’s doesnt have all star numbers. he’s nowhere near like what MIke Trout is doing for the Angels. I dont see all star, more like a lot of hype.
July 8, 2012 – 2:53 pm
gotcha Chris
July 8, 2012 – 2:53 pm
Hes good. Sure hes 19 and batting 285…is that a league wide all star?
July 8, 2012 – 2:54 pm
ASG is about the fans. They let Sandoval be the starting 3B
July 8, 2012 – 2:54 pm
I just see those teams as basically “hot” against us. maybe thats unfair.
July 8, 2012 – 2:54 pm
all-star game is a showcase in the eyes of MLB…so…yes it is. It’s like a HOF argument, best player is usually irrelavant
July 8, 2012 – 2:55 pm
being able to sweep the Rays in the Trop means we ought to at least break even against the leagues worst.
July 8, 2012 – 2:55 pm
exactly
July 8, 2012 – 2:56 pm
I think Desmond dropped out so Harper would be picked. probably a mandate fro selig
July 8, 2012 – 2:56 pm
If Trout belongs in the ASG, so does Harper.
July 8, 2012 – 2:56 pm
I loved how the drop out for injury happened as he hit the HR…lol
July 8, 2012 – 2:56 pm
I want to see Beato be a useful part of the bullpen.
July 8, 2012 – 2:56 pm
and I had both on my fantasy team from day 1
July 8, 2012 – 2:56 pm
it’s a showcase, who really cares?
July 8, 2012 – 2:57 pm
me too Brian
July 8, 2012 – 2:57 pm
wow, i dont agree there. The Angels have recovered their whole season because of Trout. Harper is another guy on the team
July 8, 2012 – 2:57 pm
Maybe we should drop Torres and let JV be our starting CF.
July 8, 2012 – 2:57 pm
Trout is probably the AL MVP so he deserves it. Harper isn’t in considering for anything other than ROY
July 8, 2012 – 2:57 pm
For no real reason.
July 8, 2012 – 2:57 pm
and other than Wade miley it’s a weak class
July 8, 2012 – 2:58 pm
But they both have done so much on the field and at the plate. It’s just circumstances that Trout revitalized the Angels.
July 8, 2012 – 2:58 pm
I liked that curve
July 8, 2012 – 2:59 pm
me too..lol, that was unhittable after the FB
July 8, 2012 – 2:59 pm
I don’t see why they didn’t replace Desmond with Lowrie. SS for a SS
July 8, 2012 – 2:59 pm
That FB might be Neil Allen straight but if the curve is working he can be good.
July 8, 2012 – 2:59 pm
Just looked back at the game log. What happened to the 2-out Mets?
July 8, 2012 – 2:59 pm
Trout is batting 343 will 11 HR. Dont think its close between them. Rizzo seems to be making a statement…especically if the cubs could get 15 more games with us!
July 8, 2012 – 3:01 pm
Interesting thing from my casual recollections. Once the pitching seems to just shut down, then all aspects of the game seem to go with it. Cant field, Cant run, Cant hit.
July 8, 2012 – 3:02 pm
We’ve seen this from the Mets. One game they’re playing perfect baseball, the next day they lose it and can’t do anything right. It’s just one game
July 8, 2012 – 3:03 pm
It’s all Thole’s fault for saying we were going to go 5-1
July 8, 2012 – 3:03 pm
Really should have though. That’s the sad part, and I hope this doesn’t come back to bite them.
July 8, 2012 – 3:05 pm
Alright, AFK for a bit. LGM and enjoy the ASG for whatever it’s worth guys!
July 8, 2012 – 3:05 pm
We faced Cliff Lee,Cole Hamels and Ryan Demspter – plus another LHP. I don’t think we should expect to go 5-1.
July 8, 2012 – 3:06 pm
It’s hard to win games when the SP gives up 4 or more runs
July 8, 2012 – 3:06 pm
and 3 out of the last 4 SP have done that
July 8, 2012 – 3:07 pm
I thought Castro was going to catch that one, too.
July 8, 2012 – 3:07 pm
it just makes NL E games harder
July 8, 2012 – 3:08 pm
Yes. After the break we have 6 important games vs the Braves and the Nationals
July 8, 2012 – 3:09 pm
Hopefully we miss Gio.
July 8, 2012 – 3:09 pm
Must keep remembering Charlies article…which Mets team is this? Its both.
July 8, 2012 – 3:12 pm
Pretty bad to swing at a pitch that hits you…
July 8, 2012 – 3:14 pm
Avoid the Shutout!
July 8, 2012 – 3:14 pm
that would be nice
July 8, 2012 – 3:14 pm
Nice job by Byrdak keeping the game close!
July 8, 2012 – 3:15 pm
Have we put up 7 yet in an ining this season?
July 8, 2012 – 3:15 pm
that game 17-1?
July 8, 2012 – 3:16 pm
or was that 2 6’s?
July 8, 2012 – 3:16 pm
Largest comeback this year was from four runs down.
July 8, 2012 – 3:17 pm
2 6s name
July 8, 2012 – 3:18 pm
Duda is getting to be a genuine worry
July 8, 2012 – 3:20 pm
cmon Scotty….blast this!
July 8, 2012 – 3:20 pm
I think Duda will be better the 2nd half.
July 8, 2012 – 3:20 pm
K fans, that was ugh-ly. Lets hit it hard in the 2nd half. LGM!!!
July 8, 2012 – 3:21 pm
Enjoy the AS game everyone! We’ll start the chatters back up in a couple of days.
July 8, 2012 – 3:22 pm
Let’s go RA!
