Mets start a three-game series against a healthy Dodgers team with Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier back in the lineup. Johan Santana takes the hill for the 7:10 start.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:21 pm
START 7/20 CHATTER
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:21 pm
Man 16 pitches in and we’re already down 2-0
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:27 pm
Hopefully the worst is over. 3-0 Dodgers, Mets coming to bat.
Well that was an auspicious start… Hope the bats can do return some of the damage.
::Watching on Yahoo from work::
Santana rusty again?
I’ve gotta get a little more work done. May ask for POV later from those lucky enough to be watching it live.
Harang giving up 2 hard hits, and they have good history against him
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:32 pm
OK Mike, I’ll be in and out
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:33 pm
Wow, that was a bad defensive play by Abreu.
Only an out at Citi field
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:34 pm
mlb.tv froze up on me – what happened?
Wright hit a deep fly that almost went out
10-15 degrees warmer and both probably are HR’s
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:36 pm
Did Ike homer?
No. Wasn’t as close as Wright’s, but still a deep fly
Got 2 sac flies though, so productive
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:36 pm
Aha – SAC flies
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:37 pm
Nice to rally back after that poor first inning for Santana
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:37 pm
We should be able to get more off Harang, too.
Yes. Always good to strike back after giving up runs.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:38 pm
BRB
Great, another hit and run works against the Mets. and now Kemp
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:44 pm
I guess we root for the Nationals when they play the Braves now.
Still early enough to root for the Braves
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:46 pm
I’m just looking for another reason to root against the Braves
I mean, the 7 game lead may seem big for the Nats, but i’d probably subtract 2-3 just due to the fact that they will shut down Straussburg
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:48 pm
Rizzo seemed to back away from that slightly, though.
I think they’ll go through with it
not that i agree with it
Hi all.
Don’t jinx us
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:49 pm
Hi Chris
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:49 pm
Yes, I’ll second what Name said!
Too late
Get the bullpen up?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:50 pm
I see I’m behind again, Ethier is up with a 1-0 count.
3-0 in real time
I’m 3-0
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:50 pm
That beats the extra-base hit I feared
Santana
He’s struggling to go inside, but he got one in there
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:51 pm
So, was this Santana meltdown going to happen anyway or is it a direct result of the no-hitter?
i would say his ankle is more of a problem than his no-hitter
I’m not convinced he has a whole season in him, no no or not
It’s easy to say that when he’s struggling
only solace is that harang is pitching on the other side
Tr
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:56 pm
Bay strike out yet?
Ue.
That’s 4 straight high flies
Fly out
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 7:57 pm
There’s a story on Yardbaker about Kris and Anna Benson splitting up
2 out magic?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:00 pm
swung at ball four.
Wow Santana has nothing tonight
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:06 pm
except for the Dodgers last time when they were missing their starts, it’s been ugly for far too long.
So… how can we fix him? Skip his next start?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:07 pm
Too soon to root for rain?
well, i’m going to eat dinner, this is getting ugly
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:08 pm
I think he needs to go on regular rest. However, I think it should be clear he’s going to get yanked early if/when he runs into trouble.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:13 pm
Be interesting to see if they pinch-hit for Santana this inning.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:15 pm
A strikeout for Nieuwenhuis – we didn’t see that one coming.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:19 pm
Two-hit game for Murphy, even if both are to the opposite field. Harang is a pitcher he should be looking to pull.
What’s happening? I go away and more runs
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:22 pm
Some scrub hit his first MLB HR off Santana.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:23 pm
They pinch-hit for him last inning so I guess it’s Beato now
I don’t think there’s an easy fix. I think the NL wised up and now like CY, our aces are no news
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:25 pm
I’m sure Dan Warthen will straighten him out in no time
yikes
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:25 pm
The game stinks – let’s at least get a good chatter going.
Of course my jinx may be real. The Rainiers got hammered last night. Noesi had an 8 run 4th.
Still 6-2? Harang can’t be that hard to hit
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:27 pm
Murphy’s the only one hitting him.
We beat him up in LA
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:28 pm
Nice curve by Beato. I like my Neil Allen comparison
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:29 pm
Nice catch DW!
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:30 pm
OK – Time for the bats to wake up and get us back in this thing.
This game is the first time i’m worried about this season. Our season is built around pitching, and if Santana/Dickey can’t produce QS, then it’s going to be long 2nd half
especially with the bullpen as it is…
They haven’t in some time now. It’s bad news.
Another interesting note, they either are both pitching really well, or they are both struggling.
I just didn’t think it could go so bad so fast.
it hasn’t been fast, they have both been bad for about 4-5 starts now
For sure name. And it goes to hitting too.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:33 pm
And you laughed when I said to get Cliff Lee!
Hitting has been fine, it’s just been masked by all the bad pitching
Well it went fast 4 starts ago
For the record, the Mets cannot beat a team with Matt Kemp in the lineup — even if you throw R.A.’s 80 mph fastball at him.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:34 pm
OK, c’mon Jason, show us there’s still some life left in that bat
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:35 pm
Hey Rob – thanks for joining us!
I think the biggest boost to this team could be Mike Baxter
They were dynamic when he was in there-albeit for a short time
a pleasure – still workin – cant stay on long, but thanks for the update… nice to have Kemp back, that’s for sure
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:36 pm
Yeah, a little different than the last time when both he and Ethier were shelved.
Remember when they were cheering and jeering when they scored off Chris Young?
I was at R.A.’s game the next day — was it 8-0? A nightmare game to sit through (well, as a Dodger fan)
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:36 pm
Are you excited about the potential Ryan Dempster acquisition for your Dodgers?
I am, actually… even with his ridiculous LOB%/BABIP numbers
guys that perform this well in a free agent year, I find, continue throughout
robreed, how is the dodgers bullpen? Harrang is up to 73 pitches and it is only the 4th
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:38 pm
I hear you can steal on Kenly Jansen
let’s just say when I look at the names in the bullpen, I suddenly feel like I did at tha beginning of 1988 looking at the roster (i.e., “who the heck is THIS guy?”)
you can steal home is the good word on that
Dont dis my Harang – I will have you know he set the Dodger record for Ks in a row this season
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:39 pm
Your yanking my chain with that one! How many did he whiff?
Matt Kemp.
no, thats a true fact I was at the game
9 ks
if memory serves, he still gave up 4
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:40 pm
9 in a row!! Wow
Was it vs the padres?
i think it was
it was late april, I think
so Harang sits in the record books… I think he beat Carl Erskine’s previous record
Go josh
I wouldn’t be opposed to a massive (bullpen) swap for the Mets like the Astors-Blue Jays.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:42 pm
April 13th he had 13 Ks against the Padres
Oh well. Only 2 runs and harang looks like junk
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:43 pm
As long as Byrdak’s part of the swap, I’m probably in favor, too
Id empty everyone but edgin
that was the game, Brian
What’s the probability that the bullpen can get through the rest of the game unscathed?
dempster just gave up 3 in the first – sweet!
Surely you jest name
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:46 pm
Wouldn’t it be our luck to get six scoreless from the bullpen and still lose, 6-2.
I can’t see how a guy named Pedro BEATO does not get beaten up.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:47 pm
Doh me aragato Mr. Beato!
2 out 6!
out of
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:50 pm
Does Cal Ripken really need to do commercials?
ugly AB cedeno
cal ripken needs to stop eating (not that I am one to talk)
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:51 pm
Yeah, if I told my son that Ripken was once a great athlete, he’d go — no way
i just saw a recent pick of ripken with a bunch of old timers… no kidding, but cal was bigger than Eddie Murray!
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:52 pm
He’s going for the Uncle Fester look.
lol
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:52 pm
another line drive for Ruben!
does harang go past 100 often?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:53 pm
10 times this year. High is 118
thanks for checkin, brian – my instinct was yes
Maybe pitch count won’t be a worry. Maybe we can hit him out of the game
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:54 pm
I still had the B-R page up from when I checked the strikeouts
Tejada isn’t that fast
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:54 pm
Nobody talks bad about Ruben in this chat!
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:55 pm
Next thing you know you’ll be saying he’s got 0 home runs
I know i’m nit-picking, but i thought he was faster
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:55 pm
He inherited his speed from Rafael Santana
I’m not old enough to understand that
Yay Murph! C’mon David!
Davis hasn’t had a 3-Run HR in a while.
He could have hit one in his last AB and I’d still agree with you.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 8:58 pm
In 668 games in the majors, Rafael Santana (a SS) had 3 SB
whew
When was the last time Duda had a 3R HR?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:00 pm
or a hit
wasnt it against the dodgers?
Seems like he only hits solo shots
i think he hit a homerun in that landslide victory last month
no he didnt
just felt like it
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:02 pm
I’m a few pitches behind and I keep waiting for everyone to post “Duda!”
June 1st was last time Duda had a 3R HR
that was the santana no-hitter
a double will do here
Hey Brian- sorry I ate AFTER Johan got creamed…
Lucas tried to check his swing, Duda, Duda
Having to listen to the Dodgers announcers withOUT Scully stinks…
steiner isnt bad
but, yes, not scully
Not great
Scully is the MAN!
scully is losing it, as much as it pains me to say
and he knows it
He is…
having lived out here (SoCal) for 20 yrs now, I have noticed each season his slipping just a bit more…
Duda is turning into Adam Dunn
but at his age he is still better than most…
Dunn from 2011, NOT 2012, sadly
since his injury at the start of this season, it has been worse
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:07 pm
If he turns into 2012 Dunn, I’d take that in a heartbeat
And that’s why I’m ok with trading him in the right deal or splitting his team with another OF.
Ditto, BJ
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:07 pm
How’s life treating you David?
i don’t want the 2012 Dunn, those K’s are not worth the HR’s
I didn’t see what everyone was saying here earlier, but if Johan isn’t hurting then we are REALLY in trouble…
He had no command tonight
Dunn’s walks plus homers plus RBIs is worth the K’s…IMO…
Just watch Santana’s AB vs Luis Cruz. Before he served up that HR, he threw a changeup so far out of the zone you know he didn’t have it at all tonight
He battles and is such a gamer that it’s hard to be angry at him…but 3 straight games with 6+ runs is a scary proposition…
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:09 pm
Yeah, Dunn’s got an .863 OPS
I’ll take it, Brian
Happily
Dodger middle relief is eminently hittable
(like ours ISN’T…LOL)
but we’re not out of this yet…
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:12 pm
Hairston looked Duda-esque on that play
LOL
Dodger announcers didn’t know that Koufax was only Dodger to no-hit the team, nor that it was in LA…
3 scoreless from the pen!
When was the last time i could say that?
I wonder if Santana is having twinges of pain in his shoulder, and if he’s not able to get good extension on his arm without being in pain…
About 9 months ago was last time, sadly, you could say that, “Name”
have a good evening guys – go bums!
I still worry about Santana’s ankle
Ankle and shoulder- deadly combo
Is there an easier out in the game than Bay?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:22 pm
Nieuwenhuis?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:22 pm
Nickeas?
over the last 3 seasons
very high strike
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:24 pm
Among those with at least 500 PA, there are 142 hitters with a lower OPS than Bay over the past three years
I bet combined they all make the same as Bay
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:25 pm
ouch
ouch
jinx
we HAVE to do something here…
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:27 pm
How can you look at a fastball right down the middle like that?
Because the kid can’t find the strikezone
he’s hypnotized by his brother???
He’s “effectively” wild
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:28 pm
Shouldn’t you be sitting on dead red in that situation?
yep
like THAT
NICE
Torres running ANYWHERE gets me nervous…
if he ran to the store, they way he’s going, he’s liable to get hit by a car…
Who is coming in?
Dodger announcers didn’t say b/4 commercial
Mets didn’t either, and they didn’t show the back of the jersey
It’s Shawn Tollenson
Tolleson
hittable but good stugg
stuff
crud
well, it’s 2-out- aka METS RUN-SCORING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
murph homered off of this guy
at the game i was at
one of the 3 i was at
just a single, murph…
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:35 pm
Can we bring Harang back in to pitch to Murphy?
lol
there are personal catchers for pitchers, y not personal pitchers for hitters?
what the **** is he swinging at
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
lucy pulls the ball away from Charley Brown yet again
But we are still in the game because of the ……… bullpen
late, but correct, call strike 3
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:42 pm
Check swing is not our friend tonight.
We’re also in it b/c other than Ethier/Kemp, the Dodgers have no live bats
I have been to 14 Dodgers games this year, and I am STILL amazed that they score ANY runs if Ethier or Kemp aren’t involved…
Hasn’t AJ ellis been good this year?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:43 pm
I’m bummed that Van Slyke’s not in the game. It was fun to laugh at him when we played out in LA
jim joyce not getting a call right, we’ve sen that before
thole has a hole in his mitt- convinced of it…
lol
evening folks
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:47 pm
Hi 848 – thanks for joining us. You can change your name in the box above this text entry
Tks Brian. I don’t know if I can get the DA removed from my forehead, lol
i guess 6 scoreless innings is too much to ask for, 1 in 6 is good
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:49 pm
We’re down 3 runs but a comeback is in the air!
I sure hope so, brian
well, the dodger bullpen is full of no-names. Let’s hope they play like a bunch of no-names
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:52 pm
Tough luck on that run last inning. A better throw by Thole and he’s out at 2B and a better throw by Torres and he’s out at the plate.
Poor inning defensively for Thole. Next Mets contender will employ a different starting catcher I’m afraid.
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:53 pm
I just wonder if we’re setting the stage for more late inning heroics from JV
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:53 pm
Hey 228 – welcome!
Kanley Jensen is probably the only name i know in the bullpen
And i’m pretty sure he’s dominated the mets
and now JV so no late-inning heroics
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:56 pm
I’m okay with completing the comeback earlier
hi It’s me Jon
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:57 pm
Hey Jon – you can change your handle in the box directly above where you enter the text.
Wow, Lince two in a row??
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:58 pm
ERA down to 5.72
gotta be kidding me
another pinch hit HR
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 9:59 pm
He’s too valuable off the bench to start
like Mike Baxter?
imagine when both are back
JORDANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unreal!!!!
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:00 pm
That run last inning hurts even more now.
He’s the man right now
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:00 pm
Didn’t look like he hit it all that great when it came off the bat.
Mets pinch hitters have been AMAZING this year
Nope looked like a pop fly
i wonder if this is the best pinch hitting team all-time,
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:02 pm
Who pitches next inning – Edgin?
end of dodgers bullpen not reliable…this could be good
Go JV!!!
Anyone else think this is the best pinch hitting team in a while? First Baxter, then for a while Hairston, and now Valdespin
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:04 pm
Were Staub and Heep ever on the same team?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:05 pm
Jason Bay gets a hit!
Think he can steal second?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:06 pm
Bay’s a good baserunner
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:07 pm
If the pitcher falls asleep, he’ll steal
Heep & Staub 1985
Loved Rusty. Old Spos fan here. Le Grande Orange was one of my heros growing up
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:12 pm
Mets PH had a .587 OPS in 1985 so not so hot
I thought they’d use Rauch. Are his knees still bothering him?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:13 pm
It’s like Collins is pissed at Rauch now and is trying to put him in a position to fail.
Gotta run, brian. email u over weekend!
And it won’t take much
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:13 pm
Tim, what did you think when they traded Staub for Singleton as an Expos fan?
I heard that Rauch had his knees drained like 3 days ago, so i think it’s still an issue
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:13 pm
Thanks David!
I saw waaaay to much of him last year in Toronto
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:14 pm
If only Sandy Alderson had…
lol, yes
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:15 pm
For some strange reason, I’m comforted by the fact that Juan Uribe is still in the league
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:16 pm
That may be the shallowest you’ll see someone play a position player. That’s embarrassing
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:18 pm
Tim, did you see a lot of Francisco too? What’s your take on him as a closer?
Anyone have confidence in Parnell in the 9th today?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:18 pm
That depends – will Kemp be batting?
Yes. He will now
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:19 pm
Parnell’s gotta be due for a decent outing, right?
something different just happened. Trout led off with a single
3 straight bad outings for parnell
and the Nats are on the verge of coughing one up big time
I really hope Parnell turns it around and quick
valdespin will get another shot in the 9th, double drama?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:23 pm
That would be insane!
When was the last Murphy HR at citi field?
I would walk Wright
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:26 pm
July 16th last year for last Murphy HR in Citi Field
wow
time for Wright to be the hero?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:27 pm
Yes, it’s always time for that
Nasty pitch
looking, sigh…..
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:29 pm
He wanted to make sure that JV could be the hero. Wright’s always looking out for the younger guys, you know.
Of course, how could we forget that. A good leader wants the credit to go to his troops
This has been a good bullpen outing so far
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:33 pm
6 runs scored, solid bullpen outing, Valdespin heroics = this has got to end in a win.
his selflessness isn’t helping my Fantasy team Brian
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:33 pm
C’mon 2 HR yesterday helped plenty
I am a greedy heathen. What can I say??
I’m just very happy that he’s having a good year
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:36 pm
Coming into today’s game he was on pace to set the franchise record in OPS
Nice
I’m just watching the Nats blow a 9-0 lead
ugly, ugly, ugly
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:39 pm
Rauch made some nice pitches to Ethier there
6 IP, 1 ER. It’s a good night no matter what-at least that’s what i want to believe
and that 1 ER could have easily been 0
if thole or torres made a decent throw
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:41 pm
Does JV magic carry over to when he’s in the game or is it only as a PH?
Will Jansen throw the ball away again
good point Brian
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:42 pm
Let’s go Ike
I think JV magic only works as PH
we’ll soon see
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:46 pm
Now they’re throwing at him!
The magic continues!
But it works in strange ways
Now throw the pitch away!
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:48 pm
We’ll take it!
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:48 pm
Good running making the turn on that one for JV
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:49 pm
OK, here’s the RBI man
You just feel like the Mets will somehow win this one
Like the braves
please make contact
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:51 pm
ugh
was that a good or bad loss?
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:53 pm
Bad – because of Santana
Lots of positives though-the most important being the bullpen
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:54 pm
Absolutely. Murphy, too
bjoura
July 20, 2012 – 10:55 pm
Thanks to everyone who dropped in tonight. We do it every night so come back and visit us again.
Santana has to turn things around
But, the game is won and lost based on SP, so i see your point on it being bad
Tks Brian. I’ll pop on over next game. Always great chatting with you guys
OK I have the game on and Duda got called out on a check swing. I don’t know, gotta see the view from third base
Hey Bobby – use the box above the emoticons to participate in the chatter. Thanks!
I am going to the game on Sunday (sect 517) weather should be great so I will get to the park early.
