Here’s some news and notes you may have missed this weekend.
Dwight Gooden wrote an introspective letter to himself for Derek Jeter’s website, The Player’s Tribune. It’s a nice short read and the advice he gives to his younger self is something that is probably good for all of us to be reminded of from time to time. On a side note, it’s great to see that Doc has gotten his life together and is doing much better over the last few years after a very turbulent stretch.
John Harper of the New York Daily News says that Sandy Alderson should take a page out of San Diego Padres GM A.J. Preller’s book. He does admit that he doesn’t know how the Padres moves will pan out as there’s likely still a lot more to come, but it is hard to not love what San Diego has done. As a fan of the hot stove season, this year has been one of the most fun in recent memories.
Not from the weekend, but from the past week, John Sickels of Minor League Ball released his top 20 prospects list for the Mets in 2015. Spoiler alert: It’s really good. They not only have the depth, but the talent as well.
With the US-Cuba political relationship warming up after 50+ years, our very own Brian Joura looks at how that might effect the international talent coming into the majors. Here’s to hoping that it leads to more of the world’s top ballplayers coming to the USA and playing in the MLB. Now guys won’t have to risk their lives to defect and playing here, and it’s hard to imagine how that’s a bad thing.
What AJ Preller has done is amazing. I cannot believe he got that amount of talent while keeping his two top prospects. I look at the Tulowitzki rumors saying it’s almost a guarantee that the Mets put Syndergaard in the deal, but that should only happen if Colorado include’s a lot of money coming back in return. I hope the Mets make a move for Tulo soon, as he is the only shortstop that can really put the Mets over and into the playoffs.
