Here are some news and notes to get you caught up on all the recent happenings in Mets land.
You may know that Ben Zobrist was traded to the Oakland Athletics this past weekend, but according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, there were discussions of a potential three-way deal between the Mets, Rays and Nationals where Zobrist would end up in Washington, and Ian Desmond would be a Met. The caveat is that the Mets would send two top prospects (one being Noah Syndergaard) to the Rays to complete the deal. It’s probably a good thing for the long term, as one year of Desmond probably won’t be as valuable as Syndergaard and another prospect for several years. If the Mets ended up with Zobrist, it might be a different story.
A tweet by New York Daily News baseball writer Andy Martino suggests that the Mets are still actively shopping Dillon Gee, and he has been a part of trade discussions as recently as last week. It’s good to see the team still trying to deal Gee, as he could be an attractive piece for teams in need of a back-end starter. Perhaps he will be involved in the swap that eventually nets the Mets a shortstop not named Wilmer Flores.
Our very own Dave Singer questions whether or not Terry Collins is capable of managing a winner.
This past weekend at McFadden’s Citi Field location the Queens Baseball Convention was held, planned by Shannon Stark and Keith “Mediagoon” Blacknick of Mets Police. Mookie Wilson, Wally Backman, Ed Charles, Josh Lewin, Adam Rubin and more made appearances at the event. If you were unable to make it, MetsBro has a nice roundup on his site.
The Desmond stuff is interesting. I wouldn’t have dealt Syndergaard either for a player on a one year deal, despite how great an acquisition of Desmond would have been. It also shows that Alderson is still working on the SS issue and trying to get creative.
Exactly, which is why I find the stuff about a supposed “lack of creativity” in the front office to funny. We have no idea about what’s going on beyond closed doors, and just because we don’t hear about it in the press doesn’t mean moves aren’t being attempted and things aren’t being tried.
It’s been more than 570 days since Alderson made a trade. The proof is in the pudding.
That number is for a trade where the Mets receive a major league player (last one EY Jr.)
The last trade of any kind was when we dumped Ike for a guy who might, maybe, somehow, make the majors in the next decade. That trade took Sandy about 24 months to complete.
What is this teeball? Every GM gets a trophy!
Trying is for losers, doing is for winners. Four straight losing teams and no urgency to change the course. Zero trades last offseason. Zero trades so far this offseason. Not even a change in managers.
Doing nothing is not creative. And it’s not funny, it’s horribly sad.
Talk is cheap.
If the Mets are feeling bold & flush, they can always re-visit a Desmond trade toward the deadline, or simply sign him as a free agent next winter.
PS — I’ll have my own QBC recap tomorrow.
I loved hearing that trade rumor, and even though it didn’t work out, I’m still happy because Alderson didn’t jump the gun. I could totally see either Zobrist or Desmond still coming to the Mets, but I fear Syndergaard or possibly even deGrom would have to go in either case, which is still too high. If I had my druthers, I’d unload three to four mid-tier prospects for either guy. I just struggle to defend messing with a rotation that by year’s end could be some combination of Harvey, Wheeler, deGrom, Syndergaard, Montero, and Matz.
Glad we didn’t deal Syndergaard, and also glad to hear that the Mets are trying to get a shortstop. I still think Colorado and the Mets are going to discuss trades, whether it is Dillon Gee for Rex Brothers, or a blockbuster involving Syndergaard and Tulowitzki.
