The Mets notched their third straight win and their 12 victory in their last 16 games with a 3-0 shutout of the Rockies Wednesday night.
- Jacob deGrom continued his marvelous streak of pitching, hurling seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts. The only negative was he ended the team’s streak of walkless innings. In fact, he surrendered four walks in the game, tying a season-high. He lowered his ERA to 2.03 as he looks to become just the third pitcher in franchise history to qualify for the ERA title and finish with a sub-2.00 mark. The other two are Dwight Gooden (1.53) and Tom Seaver (1.76).
- Juan Uribe was the hitting star of the night. He had an RBI double in the fourth and came around to score on a single by Michael Cuddyer. Yoenis Cespedes added an opposite field homer once he got to face a RHP. At this point we should platoon Cespedes and not Michael Conforto.
- Jeurys Familia overpowered the Rockies in the 9th for his 32nd save. Keith Hernandez said that Familia had “serious sinkage” with his stuff tonight. Seventh straight scoreless outing for the Mets’ closer.
- New York has limited Colorado to two runs in 27 innings so far this series. In their last 16 games, opponents have combined for just 46 runs, for an average of 2.9 per game. And 15 of those came in back-to-back outings. Since then, the opposition has tallied just 27 runs in 12 games.
I got a gut reaction: Suck it Nats! The NY Mets are in first place!
Make the lead 3.5…and counting!
Want to get it to about 10 1/2, then pull away.
Since the 11-game winning streak back in April, the Mets have gone 49-49.
The April Team and “This Team” are “different teams”
They are 13-4 since the 15-2 outburst vs. the Dodgers and look like a team ready to play in the postseason.
Remember when the Mets had Mayberry, Campbell, and Recker all in the same lineup? Me neither.
The deal with Cespedes against LHP is fixable, I believe. It’s definitely strange; I can’t name a similar quality hitter who suffered from the same kind of reverse splits.
The good news is that in 2012, he crushes both LHP and RHP, and in 2013 he had not trouble at all against LHP.
Somehow in 2014 and ’15, he’s struggled mightily against lefties. I don’t know why.
Yes, he could rest here and there in a game or two, I guess, but I think for now the best bet is to help him work his way through this.
I should note that so far, I really have no sense of the man’s personality. There have been mutterings, he’s moved around a lot so far. And the transition from Cuba to the US is not an easy one for many players. I don’t know if he’s cheerful or moody. I don’t know if he’s a good teammate or selfish. I don’t know if he’s coachable or solitary. Does anybody out there have a sense of the man?
BTW, my son who follows these things on Twitter, says that Uribe has a reputation of walking around the clubhouse naked, twirling his dong in circles, etc. Seriously. Every locker room needs one of those guys, the cock of the walk. Or as Justin Turner says, “The greatest teammate ever!”
It reminds me of that famous story from the early 90’s. David Cone is sitting at his locker being interviewed. Daryl Strawberry walks by naked, in full glory. Cone shakes his head and says, “Man, if only I could have a johnson like that for just one night . . .”
Think that story’s from “The Worst Team That Money Could Buy,” as I recall.
The aptly named President Johnson also famously used nudity to intimidate staffers and other visitors to the White House.
Sorry, I digress . . . carry on.
This starting pitching is so dominant and Clippard to Familia works just fine.
The new bench, with interchangeable parts, makes for a fresh offense every night.
If the Mets were to sign Cespedes for the next five years then their offense would be enough to win the division every year. The added revenue from attendance along with Colon and Murphy coming off the books makes it doable.
3 1/2 game lead makes the October Nationals series meaningless. Lets Go Mets.
Metsense, would love to clinch division by the beginning of the last week. We need to keep the foot on the gas because the Nationals are a team that has the pieces to get hot, and then, we’re talking 2007 and 2008.
No looking back to the dark times Gus. Its foot on the throat time. Were going “pure medieval” on the Nats from here out.
Brian is having too much fun picking photos. Love the Masheen!
