Recently, Name pointed out how similar the deals that Antonio Bastardo and Tyler Clippard signed this offseason were. Bastardo is coming off a great year where he was the fifth option in the Pirates’ pen. Clippard started off as a closer and was brought to New York to be a setup man. He performed well as an 8th inning guy through most of the regular season with the Mets but then struggled badly in the playoffs.
Bastardo had a 2.98 ERA and a 1.134 WHIP last year. He also had a 1.10 WPA and an average Leverage Index of 0.96
Clippard had a 2.92 ERA and a 1.127 WHIP last year. He also had a 0.65 WPA and an average Leverage Index of 1.50
Lifetime, Bastardo has a 3.58 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, a 0.83 WPA and a 1.22 gmLI in 316.1 IP
Lifetime, Clippard has a 2.88 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, a 6.27 WPA and a 1.42 gmLI in 562 IP
Brian, I’m in agreement that I would have preferred a bigger name than either of them, especially in light of the news about Mejia. Clippard was great until the back strain in September. Terry should have backed off a bit more at that point. All things considered, I favor Bastardo for his career numbers against Harper and Freeman.
Mejia Suspended…Permanent…according to espn
Just as i suspected, I knew you couldn’t trust fans to make the right decision.
I also wonder whether fans like Reed more than Clippard. My guess is yes as well. Probably too late to add on another poll though.
I sometimes feel fans have ADHD when it comes to their opinion of players. Very few are willing to go with a call and stick with a bit.
Wow, first player to ever be banned for PEDs, now he’s infamous. Makes me wonder if someone was feeding them to him unwittingly or he just genuinely didn’t care.
