The Mets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Pirates Saturday night at Citi Field.
- The Mets broke out the long ball, with Neil Walker clubbing a two-run shot in the first inning and Jay Bruce and Wilmer Flores contributed solo shots in the third and fifth inning, respectively.
- Robert Gsellman, making perhaps his last start in awhile, picked up the win with an outing that’s a bit too familiar to Mets fans this season, as he was unable to complete six innings. He fanned six and allowed two runs in 5.1 IP.
- Three relievers combined for 3.2 scoreless innings, with Addison Reed going two innings for the save, his eighth of the year.
Not so sure it should be Gsellman that gets sent to the bullpen but it can be a fluid decision that gets re-evaluated periodically.
All wins are good, and this one feels like it took a week to get here. Let’s take the series tomorrow. Come on Pill…
Although it took Gsellman a lot of pitches to get there, he didn’t look bad from the stands tonight.
The Mets had lost three games in a row. TC plays for today. From my leather chair I don’t feel his pressure. Reed threw 24 laborious eighth inning pitches and then came out for the ninth. TC must have felt that if it blew up in his face then he would have at least lost with his best. Gutsy managing with a “somewhat?” rested Edgin in the pen. It worked and they live for another day.
Flores with a home run. Duda now has a 1000+ OPS. Flip him in the batting order while he is hot and Bruce is not. Walker quietly having a good month.
Blevins has been exceptional.
Gsellman going to the pen for multiple innings when the starter can’t get through the sixth inning may save the bullpen. TC also has been using the double switch very effectively. Series win on the line this afternoon. LGM
