The Mets’ big hitters – of course we’re talking about Tomas Nido, Kevin Pillar and Jonathan Villar – led the team to a 7-2 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader, giving the team a split of a twinbill with the Cardinals Wednesday in St. Louis.
Apparently dying to prove how innovative he can be, Luis Rojas used Miguel Castro as an opener in the nightcap. After Castro got through the first inning, Jordan Yamomoto came on for the second inning to be the bulk pitcher. But at the first sign of trouble, Rojas removed Yamomoto for Aaron Loup, who wasn’t exactly sharp out there, forcing Trevor May to get up in the fourth inning. Loup settled down and got out of the inning and the Mets used three additional relievers to clinch the win.
Nido, Pillar and Villar each drove in two runs in the nightcap, with Nido and Villar both homering. He hasn’t played much this year but Nido has an .896 OPS and with James McCann really struggling, it seems like Nido has earned some more playing time. Injuries have opened playing time for the “illar twins” and they’ve both been producing. And after not producing – again – in the first game, Francisco Lindor was benched in game two.
The less said about the opening game, the better. The Mets fell behind early, had the bases loaded with no outs and were lucky to score one run. Then the offense didn’t do anything the rest of the game and the defense did less. After the Mets cut the deficit to 2-1, the Cardinals added two unearned runs and emerged with a 4-1 victory, their sixth win in a row. The Mets managed just two hits in the first game. Lindor batted leadoff and went 0-3. McCann also was 0-3 and the two now sport .488 and .520 OPS marks, respectively. Who imagined that Lindor would be sub-Plaweckian in 106 PA to start his Mets career?
Now I don’t feel so bad being sub-Plaweckian myself…misery does love company.
Mr. Linder is becoming quite the story.
I’ll bet Stroman is really ticked he started game 1, the deGrom slot, and inherited his offensive support. Maybe if they just lined up deGrom as their #3 years back he’d be a multi- time 20 game winner.
I’m perplexed by McCann. I mean, this guy struggles to hit the ball out of the infield. Honestly I think Nido should get a better shot…. he suffers from lack of ABs and seems to thrive once he gets some regular playing time. Move to a more platoon situation to keep both guys sharper and contributing… make McCann earn the extra commitment to his playing time.
Sprain to me again, why is it good for Castro to pitch inning one instead of inning 6 or 7 and why is it better for for Yammomota to pitch innings 2-4 instead of 1-3?
