Pete Alonso homered and drove in four runs in his first game back from the IL, providing all of the offense Jacob deGrom would need, as the Mets put up a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks Monday night in Arizona. It was the Mets’ eighth straight victory over the D’Backs.
Alonso broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a two-run single and he clobbered a two-run homer in the seventh that gave the Mets a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, it was another dominating start from deGrom. He retired the first 13 batters he faced and he finished with six shutout innings, gave up just two hits, did not walk a batter and fanned eight. Oh, he also drove in the third run of the game with a solid single to right after the D’Backs intentionally walked the eighth-placed hitter to get him up to the plate.
deGrom batted in the top of the seventh inning but after the Mets expanded their lead to 5-0, he did not come out to the mound in the bottom of the inning. He had only thrown 70 pitches and certainly looked like he had gas left in the tank.
Trevor May came on in the seventh but was unable to complete the inning, giving up two runs before he was lifted with two outs. Miguel Castro cleaned up the mess – thanks to a nice catch by Mason Williams – and Jeurys Familia closed out the game.
The game also featured the return of Kevin Pillar, wearing a clear protective mask over his nose. And Pillar delivered a single in his first trip to the plate, which drew plenty of cheers from both the dugout and the big Mets contingent in the stands.
The win upped the Mets record to 26-20, the furthest above .500 they’ve been this season. It also closed out the month of May, which saw the Mets put up a 17-9 mark. Very merry, indeed!
Screw the win, can you believe they released Mallex Smith?
Yes. What I can’t believe is that they signed him in the first place. Believe that was one of Brodie Van Wagenen’s final moves as a GM.
But, thanks for the good news update!
Brian, LOL!! Brodie signed him and told him “now, go break a leg”, and Mallex took him seriously. Had he not broken his foot, he would have been in CF instead of Fargas when it was getting bad. But, for all the hatred you show the guy, had he been available, you don’t need to trade for Maybin and Franklin Parra is still in your minors. See, he had value in some way…
How about those Mets’ fans in Arizona ! Kudos to yall for backing the team out there. It looked like Citifield when Pillar got up to bat. Way to go ! Spunky Mets getting troops back. With rotation strong, and BP excellent, they need to keep distancing from Braves, who are better than they’ve shown. Maybe Thor and Carassco can help some come August, when most teams are looking for pitching, and here come these two. LFGM !
Gotta love Villar, Peraza, and McKinney… bench mob making all the difference. Trevor May needs a reboot. He is dropping to low-leverage situations, Lugo hopefully up to it. Still need LH relievers to get tough outs in close games.
Time to remove the “acting” from Zach Scott’s title
Gut Reaction: deGrom is amazing.
Rojas is conservative for my liking and he is successful. I fear that the bullpen unnecessarily stressed. deGrom should have been stretch out by more than 70 pitches. This was game 1 of 7 in a row and last night he used one too many relievers. I hope it doesn’t have consequences.
2-3-4 in the batting order each had two hits and that’s a good sign but Pillar’s hit was inspirational.
The re-re-re-replacement-Mets of Williams and McKinney also contributed to the win. They are rolling with 5 wins in a row.
Off topic, bad news from MLBTR:
“ The Red Sox will soon decide on the three players they’re still owed as players to be named later from February’s three-team Andrew Benintendi swap, per a pair of reports from Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star (Twitter link) and Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Worthy suggests that the Royals, who owe the Red Sox two players, could have some resolution within the next week or two. Meanwhile, Cotillo indicates that the player the Mets will send to Boston is expected to be the best of the three PTBNLs and must be settled upon by this coming Friday.”
Maybe we can just give them Khalil Lee…
Can we give them Cano?
I think Khalil Lee is an interesting piece. He has great raw skills, and he will always be talked about in terms of his potential. He will either develop those talents effectively, or he will continue to hold some value as a potential star, until he doesn’t.
Speed and power together is rare enough that other organizations may be willing to take him on, give up something for him… I say try to bring him along and give him a long leash.
Wobbit, I agree with the first part of your opinion, but not the second. I do think he has good tools and a pretty swing. Still, he needs to learn the strike zone and how to hit the top half of the baseball on the high strike because that a gaping hole in his offense.
For the second point, all teams have athletes but it’s hard to get them to rise five levels. We have Palmer, Newton, Hernandez…
