It was going to be a tough go for the Mets tonight with Robert Stock facing off against Wade Miley, who came in at 7-4 with a no-hitter under his belt. The Mets were hoping that Stock could keep them in the game and give them five innings. Instead, he got hurt running out a ball in the top of the second and the Mets had to go to the bullpen extra early for the third straight day. There were valiant efforts all around but the Mets came up short, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Reds Tuesday night in Cincinnati.
Before the game started, the Mets put Jose Peraza on the injured list and added Geoff Hartlieb from the taxi squad. Turned out to be a fortuitous thing for the club, as Hartlieb ended up throwing 1.1 IP in the game. First man out of the pen, though, was Stephen Nogosek, who entered in an emergency basis. Nogosek gave the club three much-needed innings.
Yennsy Diaz, Aaron Loup and Drew Smith all pitched in the game, too, with the latter two having just one day off after heavy usage on Sunday.
Pete Alonso had a first-inning homer for the Mets and the club also scored on two defensive lapses by the Reds. But they couldn’t muster much offense against either Miley or a bad Reds bullpen, one aided by some generous strike calls by the home plate ump.
Marcus Stroman goes in a day game tomorrow and the Mets absolutely need length from him tomorrow.
They need length and can also use a gem. It’s time for Stroman to step up and plug a hole for the team… Jump start his own second-half renaissance.
